Any of you using "wake" baits?

I haven't yet but I think I read about them in either Bassin or Bassmaster a while back. I think they are super shallow crankbaits that create a v in the water as they wiggle. The fishing method didn't really seem like anything extraordinary to since it seemed to be a subset of crankbaiting, but an acquaintance of mine on another forum had some jointed was custom made for him and he asked me to make a little something for them to make them interesting. And that is what caught my attention.

Here is what his jointed wake baits look like:



And here is what he asked me to make for them:


Yep!!! Feathered trebles. They are size 2 Mustad Triple Grip trebles also dressed with a bit of flashabou.


These are size 4 VMCs with the same dressings.


All of them.

So have any of you tried "wake" baiting yet? As soon as I heal up, I think I'm going to try it out.:bball:

i have more wake swimbaits than any others.

Long before wakebaits came out or became so popular, I used to fish jointed Rebel minnows. I would toss them next to structure or along weedlines, and sometimes right into a hole in the milfoil and let them sit motionless. Then I would move the lure with only enough tension to cause it to wake and remain in place. Toward sunset this would resemble a bug or a moth stuck in the surface tension. I caught and still catch alot of decent bass using this technique.

But if that failed, I learned that reeling in the minnow slow enough to create a "V" wake would also nail the bass. Most people reel the lures in too quick and the minnow dives down about a foot or so. Looks cool, but not as effective.

Wake baits are the way to go. Those baits look sick islandbass. And the addition of your feathered hooks will set it off. I like to use wake baits in low light situations like that of a buzzbait, plug or frog. But don't limit yourself to this thinking. They will work. Also, stagger your retrieve and be very sporadic. Hope to hear good things from your wake baiting experience.

I don't know why I never gave wakebaits a go when I first learned of them and with all the comments about how they work for all of you, I can kick myself up my sit down part because I'm getting the bug to try it and I can't go fishing. Thanks for the tips and I can't wait to heal up and apply them.

I am a person that is very concerned about others and how they feel. If you are going to beat yourself up, I will gladly take this out and let you know if they work or not

Sounds good. This thread has made me start thinking of picking up a couple wake baits, but I have been reduced to a "budget" for fishing gear and no longer can just get what I want :(. Hows the rehabbing going?

This time of year. Wakebaiting is best in the early, early morning and at dark to the middle of the night. The hawgs come out at night.
