These fish are driving me CRAZY!!!

Post by jcn980 » Thu Sep 06, 2012 7:40 pm

BACK STORY: I grew up fishing bass and trout in Southern Calif and Ellensburg. Once in a while I was fortunate enough to go deep sea in So Cal.

As you can see, I don't have a lot of salmon experience. I have an 8 year old that LOVES to fish. We were introduced to salmon last year and had a blast catching pinks on trout gear.

This year I have geared up for bigger fish. We have fished the Hoh, Sky, Bogachiel, Dickey, Edmonds Pier and now the Snohomish which is right by home.

We are confined to the bank and have tried several spots. We haven't even got a strike!!!! We have tried all of methods I know. I am going to go insane!!!!!!!!!! Dick Nites, Spinners, jigs, floats and eggs, plugs. I have even tried the "here fishy" song from Bert and Bernie.

Rant over!! Thanks for reading.

fish the ranch hole in sultan. its right under the sultan boat launch and theres a ton of fish that just hole up there. most are boot kings but theres coho in there too. also catching a boot is fun even if you have to let it go.

The Wallace opens up in just over a week. Lots of coho will be coming through there.

It's not just you man, the dime bright coho rolling around in the snoho are lock jaw for even the best of us right now. Best times to hit them are first thing in the morning with just a crack of light, or twilight just as the sun sets. The rest of the day they are snooty and lockjawed, and you'll catch the odd fish out. Nothing is guaranteed to work 100% of the time, so you just throw out what you can. We spent the day on the lower snoho today watching big bright coho rolling around laughing at us, and we only had three takes all day. They're being weird and suspedning in the middle of the water column, so drift gear goes under 'em, spinners and spoons are on top of them or they avoid 'em. The best takes we had were on wizard cured roe under a float about middle depth. Don't give up, once they've been in the system for a while they'll get a little more comfortable and predictable, they'll start getting territorial as the fresh water starts to turn on spawning mode and you'll catch more fish. Thomas Eddy is full of 'em right now, hit is at 6 am and you'll find some more aggressive fish. Drop down your tackle to 8 pound leaders and light weights and you'll give yourself a bit of an edge on the fish. They're line shy and skittish right now. And when all else fails, tie on a big chrome and green plug and cast it like you would for bass, or throw a crippled herring through the school, that can irritate them enough to get them to bite. When you've done the best you can, you know they're just not biting. It takes a bit of experience to know when it's not you, it's the fish, and you can still go home satisfied that you did everything right, there just wasn't a bite.

JCN 10% of the people are catching 90% of the fish.Takes time learning how to do it..Im still learning myself.Caught a bunch of humpies last year.Still after my 1st silver and king.Takes patience, and know how..Once you learn the know how will be a lot of fun!

+1 to all of the above.

That is the problem with starting out on pinks - pinks are definitely not the norm. I always look at other anglers around me, if they aren't catching anything either then I know it's not just me. If they are, then I start studying, asking questions and changing up.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

I've been fishing 30+ yrs and consider myself a skilled fisherman but even I will walk into a hole and watch people and how they are fishing....if I see 1 person catching consistently , I will take notes for sure...

Thanks for the support guys! I have tried all of the methods mentioned above. We have been fishing Thomas Eddy watching all of those fish jump and roll around us.

I will keep at it!
