Steelheadin the Washougal?

Post by Rambo » Wed May 14, 2008 9:52 am

My cousin has been steelheadin on the Washougal for the last year and he has a few good lure set-ups but I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions of their own for set-ups? i like to have a good variety in the tackle to choose from and I haven't been steelheadin but once or twice for about 3 seasons. Thanks for the help.

Here's an article by 3 Rivers Marine...
http://j.b5z.net/i/u/2076006/i/Top_5_Ba ... elhead.htm
I don't do any steelheading, I read a lot about it and hear about it on other forums, but I do know that those baits are very popular, and another I would add to that list for lower, clear water conditions would be the float and jig....That Tadpolly in the #2 spot on that article is only fishable from a boat usually..

the best rig i have ever used in the washougal is a egg drift set-up.

i have also used bluefox spinners.

its all about the time of day, water conditions, and strength of the run.

I try to drift them but if you come to a deeper area let it float around thr bottom and it will kill them:cheers:

Sometimes a smaller worm works better than a huge one and a corky helps also sometimes but play around and catch some fish:cheers: Try lighter leader at least 8 Lb. if not six!

Thanks for all the info guys. I was supposed to hit that this weekend since I was down there but with the sun causing all the snow melt it was way too high. But the next chance I get I'll try out some of the new arsenal. Also, if anybody else has some more to add to the bank, keep em comin. Good luck fellas and lines tight.

one more question, when you drift the worms do you ball the worm up on the hook like you are fishing for catfish or do you leave a long tail end to wiggle?

I use a 1/o bait holder hook from eagle claw (they hold the best) and hook through the head and come out the ring leaveing a good tail! Like I said before look around for the smaller night crawlers (not garden worms small night crawlers)you know the ones you HAVE to buy when you want the biggens#-o

I would thread it if i were you to give it a more natural presentation. If you find the whole night crawlers are to large you can always cut them in half, but unfortunately all the tasty gut's of the worm will come out. a size 1-1/0 gamagatsu will work great for this, eagle claws are good trout hooks but my father has had steelhead bust them in half.
