Good for the owl! I love those things. Saw one the other day, it was a little guy. But I've seen quite a few animals fall victim to messy anglers.
I've saved a heron from fishing line before, and helped quite a few seagulls that got caught trying to eat bait as we cast. Seriously, they're so dumb they grab your herring out of mid air. Fishing out at Westport it always seems to be a kid that catches a seagull. Most of the time they fly around until they get reeled in and I don't even have to use a jacket, they tame right up and let you untangle them. Crows are a little bit more moody, so I'm a little more careful with them. Although that heron was really kind of scary, being so big and whatnot. He honked really loud and that was startling, but calmed down and let me cut him out of the kine jungle he was in. You'd be amazed how often I see these birds tangled up in fishing line, weasels and small rodents as well. There was a nest off the bank at this one spot that caught a bunny. The thing was tame like a pet rabbit once I got him undone, and wouldn't leave. Just wanted to lick you and eat the grass you fed would give him. This is why we need to clean up those snags more often! I know it's probably pretty hard to get the line off the power lines and stuff, but the line on the bank and trees within reach is really easy to pull out and throw away.
