cascade question
hello all, I plan on heading up to the cascade river next week. I've never fished the skajit, cascade, or been up that way. if anyone can provide feedback to the following it would be greatly appreciated:
should I wear chest waders? If I can get away with it I prefer to just were my insulated boots, but if I need to wade at all or cross the river anywhere, I will bring my waders.
what's the highway condition like? I drive an all wheel drive, think I will have any problems if we get a little snow?

Re: cascade question
bring yer waders. It gets cramped up at the top sometimes. There are some really fun places between the mouth and the hatchery that like waders, not to mention that you need to cross the creek to get to the river from the hatchery which when it's high will get you wet. You don't necessarily NEED waders, but they come in handy.
I think if you're careful the drive will be fine, watch out for ice though. I do it in my front wheel drive toyota.

Re: cascade question
Yo I fished it today. its really starting to slow down. only a few fish caught up and down the river. I managed to get a 9 or 10lb hen that I released. for baits either fish eggs or shrimp bottom bounced under a bobber or a bobber and jig tipped with shrimp. if the water is really high (above 1200) fish the hatchery stream right below the railing. still a good chance to catch one but you should have been there over thanksgiving weekend and the weeks after. wooh wee it was good.

Re: cascade question
Yea your a little late, the cascade is a november december run, most fish have made it into the hatchery, theres TONS in there now, only a handful of fish taken on the river daily right now, not sure if more are coming or if its winding down, it usually winds down in january. just fish first 2 holes in main river below hatchery. Best chance right now..

Re: cascade question
Thanks for all the feedback guys. After hearing how slow it might be, unless I hear some more fish have moved in, I might just hold off until next year.
Re: cascade question
Make yer own reports man! Steelhead come home all the way into January. The Cascade has been fish in a barrel on account of the fish didn't go up the creek, just hung out in the river. High water put some in the hatchery, but they're still coming. Steelhead are by no means ever a guarantee, even the best of us can go fishless when the fish are there, but it's all about fishing, not catching.

Re: cascade question
I think I'm going to try and get out there tomorrow, will let you know how it goes. Even if it's slow, it should be a good trip as I've never ventured north before so will be cool to check out a new river to me.

Re: cascade question
FYI: The river really shot up the other day, so I didn't make it up to the Cascade. Since I had cleared my morning and afternoon to fish, I made a quick run over to a local river (Metzler on the Green). The flow wasn't too bad, but the water was pretty dirty still. Fished for a couple hours. There were 2 other folks there. Didn't see anyone get a bite while I was there. Thanks again for all of the feedback guys.
