what's with all the dinky fish?

Got a chance to fish the SolDuc this last weekend - we caught plenty of Coho's, but the majority were dinky little things - 3-4 pounders - out of about 20 coho's we caught, only one was "regular" size (8-12 lb range)....(we caught a couple Steelhead - no complaints there - smallest was about 14 lbs....

Re: Absolute cheapest humpy lure

Corky and yarn. Works in the Puyallup But is this the cheapest? You'll need corky, hook, some yarn, weight, swivel. I can see all that < $1/setup, but will it really be the cheapest? scrap the corky, and the swivel. weight, hook, pink yarn = pretty cheap - Dump the spinning rod and grab a fly rod, ...

Re: Stocking Up For Steel

I also got one of EVERY 1/8oz jig we had. Just a bunch of patterns and colors. Can never have too many jigs right!? unless you fall when wading......then the answer can be "yes, yes you could" you will find, after years of fishing, that you will gravitate to 2 or three patterns/styles/flavors. thos...

Re: Tying Jigs?

clothes don;t fall apart when they are wet..... sewing thread works just fine..... I have been using polyester sewing thread for 20 + years and the fish don;t seem to know the difference....comes in a zillion colors and cheap. not saying all thread is created equal, because there is some seriously n...

Re: Tying Jigs?

I do my own too - i'm in the same range of about 5-10 cents of materials on a jig - I also do bare jigs from the internet too (about $10-12 per 50 on 2x strong Steelhead hooks - don't make mistake of wimpy hooks). I use a can of white spray paint primer if any paint at all. marabou is about 2.50-4 b...

Re: BC Steel Spoons/How To Use

the strike can go either way.... your first hook up will probably be the rip-the-rod-from-your-hands-becasue-you-weren't-paying-attention type of strike - it'll be one you always remember and will convince you to always have a few spoons on hand... (and pay more attention) you should always have som...

Re: New boater on the river. Help please!

the jet is the best - but spendy (ohhh santa clause.....) got some decent oars? First time or two on the sky, you may want to raise the prop as you go through some of the rapids till you get a good feel for the lines..... once you think you know what your line will be, you can come back upstream on ...

Re: BC Steel Spoons/How To Use

pretty straight forward. Tie a swivel to mainline, add about 2 feet of leader, tie on spoon. Cast straight across or slightly down current, let the spoon sink, then tighten the line - works best if you don't really reel but let the current swing the spoon across the river bed/current. you should fee...

Re: Anyone else had a horrible Coho season?

coho? what's a coho? I don't usually keep fish, so don;t have a kill-count, but my journal shows I have done just about as well as last year... pretty lame... about 30 fish or so thus far.... and I fish a couple times a week. (so that number equates to about a little over 1.4 fish an outing, with so...

Re: Hook Size poll.

1/0 up top, 1 as a trailer - 1/4-3/4 inch between hooks, and usually throw a 1/16 - 1/4 oz baitweight above the whole mess. For kings this may step up to a 2/0 or 3/0 with a 1/0 trailer. don't use bait for steelhead, chums or pinks ResQ. I tie my setups in a fixed position... just tie your trailer h...

Re: best bet for shore fishing?

Sharpshooter.... it;s been a while since I did any surf fishing, but here's what I look for and it usually leads to success.. when you get to the beach, look down (or up) the beach at the waves - you;ll notice they come in in nice straight rows.... periodically along the beach there will be spots wh...

Re: Even Year Snohomish Pinks

Stilly - the even year run of pinks on the sky is very small (a couple hundred? a thousand maybe?) at best. occasionally someone will catch one in an even year, but I would certainly not target them unless you have nothing but time on your hands and don;t mind catching something different than a pin...

Re: Fisheries "Science"

wow - Stilly - thanks for starting the topic - definitely got us all thinking..... now my two cents..... on the whole RBT vs Steelhead issue - all I can say is they are the same but different (how's that for taking a stance?) as far as the fish population decline..... it is pretty basic math that te...
