Talk to me about mackinaw

The word is, that if I'm willing to pound up the hill to Lake Wallace, there are lake trout to be had. IF one knows how to effectively fish for them. In general terms I'm not keen on advertising non-standard fish in a lake, but in this case, hike will keep out all but the most determined. This is no...

Re: Greenlake stocker vs Lost Lake cutthroat ... FIGHT!

Wow, that is a great story.

And yes, I need to find more sources of brook trout. Because as an unapologetic carnivore, I must EAT THEM!

Re: Alaska Halibut Fishing Trip

Not to mention, if you eat fish, you dont want gigantic halibut anyway. 40-60 pounders are perfect.

Re: Greenlake stocker vs Lost Lake cutthroat ... FIGHT!

Funny you should say that ... a buddy of mine at the gym made some comment about eating trout the other night, about how he hadn't had trout in a long time and how great it was. I said no kidding, you fish? He said yeah, at the counter at Whole Foods. He laughed at the face I made. He's getting marr...

Greenlake stocker vs Lost Lake cutthroat ... FIGHT!

So intellectually, I am comfortable with the fact that stockers dont taste good and wild fish from wild lakes do. But once in a while I'll eat a stocker that I kept because I speared it in the eye or something (not one that's been in 6 months ... a new stocker) and think to myself ... "eh, this isn'...

I'm going to have to work with JonB on his driving phobias. There is no traffic getting to Greenlake at dawn on a Saturday.

Re: dock fishing etiquette question

funny I randomly stumble into this thread. my advice to you, other than to leave the municipal stocker lakes in the dust, is to roll down to big 5 and drop $40 on a crappy rubber raft. sure, it looks like a kid's toy. sure, it's bright orange like a pumpkin. and yes, it takes 475 pumps to really ful...

Re: Snaggers/poachers get caught!!

I suppose it's important to choose words carefully, as leaving the wrong public record could one day prove unfortunate. But I will say that if I were to ever come across such activity in person, it wouldn't fish in my freezer the next morning.

89 trout challenge - Saturday, 12/13/14 (Revised)

Saturday, December 13, 2014. Is it a silly numerical thing of no meaning? Sure. But it is a silly numerical thing of no meaning that wont come around again for nearly another century. The chances of any one of us being alive on January 2, 2103 is essentially zero. Any excuse for a party, right? In h...

Re: Lake Wallace - who knows the area?

Thanks for all the responses guys.

I guess it does still baffle me though that no one has tried to drive straight to the lake. Looking at the map, that's the first thing I think of doing rather than all this hiking.

I guess I'll just have to borrow an SUV and see how close I can get!

Re: Lake Wallace - who knows the area?

Ok great, thanks guys. So I just walk or bike the trail for about a mile, and I will see what used to be a railroad track and I can just bike that? I'm looking at the link of the map of the park and I can't tell what's what heh. What is labeled "DNR road to Startup" is on Google maps, but the more n...

Re: Lake Wallace - who knows the area?

Thanks for the reply. The logging road you mention. Which one is it? I dont see one originating anywhere near what looks to be the "start" of what I presume is the trail. Nothing really shows up on Google maps other than a big green area. And, of course, the logging road coming in from the west via ...

Lake Wallace - who knows the area?

I have some friends possibly hiking to Wallace Falls next weekend. I was thinking I would take advantage of the forecast 50 degree temps to hit the lake for 3-4 hours of fishing. I have some questions: How far past the falls is the lake? Is the trail to the falls, and then to the lake, good enough t...

Re: lake stocking questions

I'm trying to think of a time I've actually caught a fish plunking. I dont think I ever have. Either I've fallen asleep from boredom (I have quite literally anchored, roped the pole to my arm, and taken an hour nap in my raft in Lake Ballinger and when I woke up I still had a nightcrawler down there...

Re: lake stocking questions

I have no idea what the actual numbers are. But let's say they put 1000 jumbos into beaver. Compare the value of that, with: 100 into beaver 100 into cottage 50 into ballinger 50 into haller 50 into bitter 100 into pine 100 into martha 50 into cassidy 50 into boren 100 into bosworth 50 into angle 50...

Great report. Thanks for posting. I was wondering how I would make it through the winter not being able to fish after work cuz it was dark.
