Re: 2017 Pike tally

Looks like a pretty small window. I've been glancing at my ice rigging stuff. Often get a real cold snap for 3" of early Dec. ice.

Re: 2017 Pike tally

You'd think, especially the bigger ones, would be moving shallower with the cooling water temps. But the opposite seems to be true. I tried deeper 20 foot water also off the breaks to no avail. Maybe they have their seasons mixed up. Throw a calendar in the water next time you are out.

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Well, I've been pike..ing and gripping. Only picked up three small ones in Minn. last week. Post cold fronts, post storms, high gale winds. A washout. Tried Mica Bay today. Beautiful cabbage beds where I picked them up years ago but not a bite today. I believe I have forgotten how to fish! [crying]

Re: Pike Fishing Etiquette

I feel your pain. I've had boats leave their dock and power past me about 30 feet away in a big, open bay--Mica. I've had a boat run over my casting line and snag my hook as they powered by. I waved frantically and they waved back at me marveling how friendly the fishermen were on Hayden Lake. I gue...

Re: Heading for Merwin

Don, Merwin sounds like Curlew was a few years ago. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they would plant enough in Curlew also to make up for the heavy attrition being experienced due to mishandling by fishermen and purposeful mortality. 250/year doesn't cut it when only 4/100 plants make it to 40". That's ...

Re: Everyone should do it at least once!

Lax did my son's 50 inch tiger muskie and it was an excellent job also. they are highly recommended. I didn't know you had to tell them to make it like the original. that seems like it goes without saying. Good info. I got a 46"x20" tiger at Curlew first week of Sept. Going to Minn third week of Oct...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

I took a short run over to the Boundary Dam Res. Saturday but only had one small follow. Did ok there in the past but with the lack of fish to move down from Box Canyon it appears that prospects in Boundary might be slim also. Didn't stay till sundown, though. They often bite better there then.

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Oh, I know about the glorious CDA system. I've been going there since the mid 90s. But its a fair push from Colville, so I can hope for some local fixes in between. Where I have caught a few nice pike in the Columbia system, now I get no big ones and just 14 inchers. The big ones are not in my net a...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Well, I tried for a Washington pike yesterday. Managed a juvenile out of the Columbia so I also barely avoided a skunk. My sis got 3 juveniles. The good news is that at least they are successfully spawning. My 2 year old grandson got ahold of my clicker and ran my pike tally up to hundreds! I might ...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Hey Rick, I would think you would be running out of your old P.O. River pike pics by now. ha. That's the only place and time that those kind of pike up to 19 lbs would be coming from. You can fuzz up the background but I can tell from the color of the water where they were taken!!!

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Thanks for the Chain review, Mark. I was getting ichy to get back there but you cooled my jets for now. Good to hear the weeds are not choking everything out yet. I'll be chasing muskie shadows next weekend at Curlew and then will be back to pike. Haven't found any on Roosevelt but a few guys have, ...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

You don't want me in your boat, Rick, you'll never see another 20 again, ha. I guess I was cut out to be a guide. I've gotten my son on a 20 and grandson on a 17.5. Other grandson got a 45.5" sturgeon last week on Roosevelt. took 23 minutes to get him in. I almost got to Noxon a couple years ago but...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Hey Rick, that's one BIG slough in the pic. And that point of land behind the 42" pike sure looks like the SE tip of an island in a certain chain lake? What a lucky guy. I've fished for pike for 67 years and am still looking for a 20 pounder

Re: Excellent source for Fluoro leaders for Toothy Critters

Your excellent pic is centered on the exact spot of weakness I referred to. the bigger sizes have a little more metal around the hole and will hopefully work out ok for you. I really like the ball bearing swivels also except for that weak spot. That halibut in your I.D. pic would probably be a good ...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Spent the holiday on the chains. Family picked up 24; I got 10 more to bring 2017 total to 12. Best was 31" x 7 lbs. Water mid 60s and clarity+-4 feet. Perfect pike conditions there now. cabbage about two-three feet tall in 5-6 feet of water so you can fish all over and not just edges. but that won'...

Re: Excellent source for Fluoro leaders for Toothy Critters

watch out for those ball bearing swivels. the hole drilled thru the pin has normally very thin side walls and I quit using them when a couple broke out. Also be sure the split rings are soldered twice. I would get at least 18 inch leaders if they are available. A nice muskie is at least 18 inches gi...

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Finally got on the board at the CDA chains. Two small pike and lost two more for a one day tally. Typical post-cold front slow action. Water is about 3 feet higher than summer normal allowing fish to scatter into the adjoining swamps.

Re: 2017 Pike tally

Well, panfish you certainly got me beat. It probably would help if I went fishing instead of mechanicing on old equipment, working, etc. Hint: fish before the nets, not behind!
