Re: Saving money for kids college

For what it's worth, I passed on all the new programs and invested in 2 mutual funds. This way I knew what I was getting and was able to determine the focus of the investments, and however you package it, these are investments. Don't want to be tied as much to the market? That'll cost you! Want anyt...

Re: So i got me a new canner

"No air left in the cooker"?
That can't be. You put 3 quarts of water in the bottom and close the canner so the rest is air. When it boils, steam (water and air) comes out the pipe vent that the pressure regulator sits on.
I wonder what she meant?
Maybe no 'pressurized air' when you try to open it?

Re: So i got me a new canner

My new Presto 16 qt canner came in on Saturday. I washed it all in hot soapy water as advised, and then on Sunday prepared some fresh peaches and canned 9 half pints. Beware, they shrink, so pack em' in there (with the recommended 1/2" head space)! On Monday, I got a King salmon from a local hatcher...

Re: kokanee smoked, then canned.

A canner I've just ordered should arrive tomorrow, and I've never canned before either. I've done a bit of research and so have some ideas but would also appreciate suggestions. I have some smoked trout that I now just might try canning as well. Sounds interesting.

Chelle, From the way you've handled yourself here, that guy was definitely the loser in your exchange. I play craps and in that male-dominated game, there are also a few who think women shouldn't participate. Thankfully they are the small minority there as well. Welcome to salmon fishing and this fo...

Re: Looking for a pressure cooker for canning

I can't help you here Spokey9 but I am considering getting one myself. Any advice as to size or features to look for would be welcome. New, the price difference between 16 and 23 quart is negligible. Is bigger better in this case? I hope you don't view this as hijacking your thread.

It sounds like dad knew a gift that would go over really well. Does he fish himself or has he in the past? He might be the ideal person to have along to give pointers and help out. Good luck tomorrow!

Re: new to tiger and bass fishing, help?

Hey MissHeather! Bass fishing should only get better as the summer progresses. If you have a decent cast, you may want to try a Rapala or two. They are the small balsa wood fish with 2-3 treble hooks on each and run about $8 per lure. They come in different fish patterns (maybe try a rainbow trout o...

FYI: I just downloaded this app, or at least one called GPS-Marker while at work. Sitting at my desk I marked my location, then immediately tried to locate that spot. It indicated the spot was 0.7 miles away. I erased that point and remarked my desk. I looked for that point and was told it was 3 mil...

Re: taking my girlfriends 8yr old niece fishing for her 1st

I've been taking neighborhood boys (10-15 years old) for the past month, and I wouldn't rule out trolling as well, especially if the bites are slow. This way it won't be viewed as continuing to do the same with the same result. You can explain that if this isn't working, we'll try something else, ho...

Re: Manila clam digging on Oakland Bay

Great video Fish-or-Man! Thank you! I have to add my 2 cents worth. The best way to get them to purge is to bring back a small amount of salt water from the beach and let them sit in that for a few hours, but keep it refrigerated or as cold as possible (32-50 degree range). They will want to breathe...

Heya Squidder! Welcome. You don't say if you have a boat or not. Knowing that would help others give you advice. If not, it might also get others offering you a trip out on theirs. I'm based in north Kitsap and can suggest some places here. Just be aware, most lakes are closed now, but due to open o...

Re: Ever seen a tackle box lying in the middle of a freeway?

I would suggest a separate tackle box for each type of fishing gear, which is what I do. Also, you might want to pick your favorite (fresh/trout or salt/salmon) and ask people to give suggestions for that type first. A net, again different for each, would be a good place to start. It's great to see ...

Hey Shipwreck! Leland is my go-to lake! You should do well there today. Fishing at the dock has been good as well as just to the right of the boat launch. I have been fishing off and on there all winter and it is really picking up. I usually use my 12' inflatable but occasionally go with a friend in...
