Cleaning Fly Line

Post by leahcim_dahc » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:55 am

While I was out fishing today I noticed as the day progressed, my fly line (not sure if it matters, but it is the intermediate sinking line) started getting a tacky feeling to it and as I stripped the line, the guides in the rod would "howl". I checked on the manufacturers website, but found nothing other than "clean your line before storage...". Needless to say, that really didn't help much. Is there anything in particular you guys use to clean your line and guides? The guides, I can probably get away with denatured alcohol and a q-tip...but not sure about the line. Thanks!

Disregard...dug the box out of the trash, found a pamphlet that says to use Cortland XL Cleaner to clean the line. I guess that's what I get for not reading the directions...#-o

Yup, a flyline cleaner works real good. :-) And ya want to do it more often than just before storage. Try a dressing also now and then.

Looking back I probably should have chosen my wording a bit more carefully. I set myself up for that one. :D

I guess I was more curious about whether or not to use the same cleaner on sinking line as floating line or vice versa. And what type/brand to use that wouldn't damage the line.

Reading through the pamphlet, it states to clean every outing...which I haven't done on a regular basis. But then again, I only got about 3 mos. of usage out of the line before it sat for a year. I put new line on my spools and don't want to wreck the new stuff...so I'll probably clean it more often.
