Columbia Cohos

Good day all!

Just a quick question if anyone has any insight. I have fished the Hanford Reach area for fall Chinook quite a bit and have never seen or heard of people catching any Coho up this far. In fact, never heard of much success above the Umatilla river, anyone know why? I know there are not large numbers of fish but I would think we would catch some by accident once in a great while. Just curious.

Cohos aren't big on hitting the headwaters of a long river system. They run later in the season to take advantage of the rain that fills the smaller tributaries to the main river. Chum are the same way, preferring the smaller feeder creeks for spawning and use flood conditions to get to places that other salmon wouldn't even consider.
