Eagle claw laser sharp cirlce hooks?

Post by troutfinatic » Thu Mar 01, 2012 5:55 pm

Any one out there use these eagle claw laser sharp circle hooks? I bought them to try on trout. First time I saw some small enough to try. I got the circle hooks in size: 8,6,4. It amazes me every time I buy hooks how different the size of the hook can be, even though the size # is the same. I ordered them, so I had no ideal what the actual size really was. I'm glad I got the size #4 because the size # 8,6 are tiny. I release my fish, so I was hoping this will keep the trout from getting hooked deep in the throat. Circle hooks are suppose to hook them in the lip only? [unsure]
I never used circle hooks before. I'm also worried about the power bait keeping the hook from catching the lip of the trout. #-o

Thanks in advance for the replies

When using circle hooks, there is a different technique involved in successfully hooking a fish. Instead of trying to set the hook when one detects a strike, you need to give the fish line and wait until it is moving away from you before quickly reeling in line to place the hook. What this does is drag the hook and bait out of the fishes throat/mouth and hopefully it catches the corner of the jaw. When you load up your hook with bait, you will want to make sure to leave an indentation between the shank and the bend at the point. Good luck and try practicing on perch first!

I noticed these hooks, circle hooks dont come in an off set hook style in the smaller sizes, #6,#4
There is a sticker on the package that says tournament approved on these Eagle claw hooks.
Why dont anyone make a circle hook with an off set hook in size # 6, #4 ??? [confused]
Thats the perfect size for still fishing for trout, and lip hooking the fish, so you can release it
safely. With out the off set hook, and using power bait I dont think these hooks will work good.
You will stand a better chance of hooking the lip of a trout if the hook is off set. But nobody makes
them. This is for you manufactures out there, WHATS UP? [sad]
