If there is a previous thread on this topic, please post the link, I couldn't find one. Ref the upcoming Lake Stevens Kokanee Derby: Since State regs require counting all "trout" caught on bait towards the daily limit, whether kept or not. And since "bait" includes scents, corn, worms, etc, etc., my interpretation is that it is illegal to cull fish to get a heavier limit for the tournament, if you are using any scent, corn, worms, etc. on your wedding rings or spinners. Any comments appreciated...well, ALMOST any comments. Don't beat me up too bad if this is a "beating a dead horse" issue :-/

Since the Weather guys can't prognosticate 3 days in advance accurately, just a bit soon to figure it out for May 17 :pirat:

From the reg book:
STEVENS, LAKE (Snohomish Co.) ALL SPECIES - chumming permitted.
KOKANEE Year-round No min. size. Daily limit 10.
All Other TROUT Year-round No min size. Daily limit 5. KOKANEE not included in TROUT daily limit.
Other Game Fish Year-round Statewide min. size/daily limit.
I fish not because I regard fishing as being terribly important, but because I suspect that so many of the other concerns of men are equally unimportant, and not nearly so much fun. ~ John Volker

Thanks, Gringo. As a retired "Fish Cop" from Alaska, I'm the LAST person who wants to get involved in "What if..." discussions of fishing regs! So I'll close out my question on this issue with:

While I'm not likely to catch a limit of 10 fish: Is it common and accepted practice to "sort" for bigger fish in the Derby whether or not scent or shoepeg corn is used on the wedding ring, hootchie or spinner?

Thanks...and I'm done!

That's a good question of which I have no answer since I haven't fished the derby.. Yet. There are other on this site that have fished it. Hopefully they will chime in and we'll both learn something!

They have prizes for the Biggest bag limit, biggest trout as well as the 1,2,3 prize for biggest Koke for adults, For kids 1st place is Koke, 2nd, 3rd any fish. The biggest koke bag limit of as many you caught up to 10 fish. Its not easy to get all 10 in the boat with the fishing pressure even for the guides. Your required to follow the rules set for the lake by the WDFW. I think you mean by "sort" is to catch more than 10 and only keep the big ones? I would say no and definitely not accepted practice its too hard to say if there will be more fish after that first and that small one might be .001 oz for the winner. This is a fun family derby and kids tickets 14-under are free. They have good monitors out there keeping it honest. I hope that helps.

Look up Sunset Co park on the E lake shore drive on google maps. Ive caught kokes in that area in my boat. I dont know if you have the 2 pole endorsement but I would try a slip boober with bait like maggots and corn.( worms/night crawlers dont do well in this lake for kokes) My 2nd rod I would have a spinner I could cast far or a lead jig like a crippled hearing or buzz bomb I could cast at jumping fish. The park does fill with kids when it gets warmer. I hope that helps

Used to catch a lot of kokes with a couple eggs and a live maggot under a bobber from shore, try it out

Thank you so much! I moved to Lake Stevens in October and know nothing of the fishing here. I live a short walk to Lundeen park, but thats a swimming beach. Thank you Norm, tips always appreciated. I was not tuned into chum thinking at all. I forgot its legal on Lake Stevens. Idstud, no I didn't buy a 2 pole endorsement. I also sent you a pm a few days ago, thanks for the tip about Sunset Park. I've decided I need a new reel and am putting my $ toward that instead of the derby. I'll be on the water though. ;) i hope everybody has a lot of fun and hooks some beautiful fish. I love the excitement of derbys as much as opening day!
