LW Cutt Help

Hey guys. Im trying to get out to Lake Washington soon and fish for Cutts. The only place ill be able to try is inside the bay at seward park, because its sheltered enough for me to feel safe in my raft. Its a pretty deep/long bay so it may hold some cutts. That will be my main target, but i may try for some perch as well.

My questions are:
-Im going to put 12lb test leaded line on a Abu Garcia Ambasueder 5500, will that work?-
-Im really good at spooling up reels tight and good, but for the lead, should i just let the ppl at sportsmans or joes or where ever do it?
-What size rod? i have a 7ft bass bait caster rod, and a bunch of 8'6" salmon/steelhead size rods, so what would be better?
-What patterns for lures should i bring? All i can think of is perch and a plain silver.

This info, plus anymore suggestions or advice you have would be greatly appreciated.

well my advice is 12lb test will work as long as you run a long leader.

a seven foot rod will work

Run a frog pattern

Here's what you want to do; listen:

1. Spool your reel yourself...I use an Abu Garcia Ambassaduer so you're good to go there.
2. Use an 8'6" rod that is fairly flexible...don't go too stiff...these fish don't fight like marlin.
3. Troll perch colored needlefish.
4. Troll in 20-40 feet of water and work the weedlines.
5. Pay out 3-5 colors. Vary until you find the fish.
6. Mark bait on your fishfinder...if there is NO bait, move locations.
7. Troll slow... 0.45 - 1.50 MPH.
8. Be patient and don't expect hot action...1 fish per hour is very good.
9. Change lures and use krocodiles if the perch or frog needlefish do not work.
10. Have fun, and be safe in your pursuit of LW cutts.

I have a nice lamiglas 8'6" that is much more sensitive and has is much lighter than others the same size.
I seem to be pretty much set for gear and lures.

One question, what did "5. Pay out 3-5 colors. Vary until you find the fish." mean?

it means let out 3-5 colors on the leaded line

Sometimes you need to get out 3 colors (to yellow if bought off Cabelas) but sometimes the fish are out 4 colors or 5 colors...each color puts your lure 10 feet deeper than before. 2 colors out = 20 feet out (blue color) 5 colors out = 50 feet out. My experience, however, is there is about 70% reality...what I mean here is that if you are out 3 colors...rather than being down 30 feet (3 x 10 = 30feet) you are probably down 23 feet...just my experience.

yeah that is a good rule to follow as kutt knows what he is talking about and leaded line can really get u down trust me

Thanks kutt. Yeah, kinda same thing with trolling for silvers, we put it down about 25 pulls [close to a foot as posible, but its proboly only 15-19ft.

Also, how should i do the leader [length]? Am i gonna have to use a swivel and reel it all the way into the reel?

Glad to be able to help you out...you should get 3-4 fish if you put in 3-6 hours worth of fishing time...don't give up and get frustrated...many LW anglers do...they call me the kuttkilla cause that's what I do...

Just the lure Rob G. Makes for a heck of a fight. This is why I love this fishery...it's amazing. Cutts aren't known for amazing fights anyways, and NO it does not detract from the fight of the fish...with pop gear, yes it does.

Hey Jt, dont worry about taking your line to the store to get it spooled on. I think this is totaly overated. I have spooled my line out in the boat, rain, snow while drivin and drunk as a skunk from 2lb test all the way up to leaded line. Plus I change my line every 3 months at the most (except with leaded I have had the same stuff on the same real for 5 years). And I own atleast 20 combos, so I have spooled my fair share of reels in my life and have never had a problem with spooling it myself.
