Last year i experimented with trolling powerbait. I didnt think it would work, but it actually caught more fish than the good ol roostertail. I just used a little split shot and shaped the powerbait more oval along the hook. very effective.

I have been trolling for trout for the last few years with power bait and worm.
you make a small ball of power bait at the eye of the hook and then pinch a night crawler in half and slide it on the hook like a tail. It drives trout crazy. i have had more fish bite this than any other bait or lure out there. you can use a split shot or two depending on your depth you want.

My number 1 tip isnt about baits but about locations. Start looking at all the stocking schedules. You can be doing everything right but w/o the fish being there its hopeless. If its stockers you want look at this years schedule. If you want some big fish, either check out the triploid plants for the last few years, or switch over to selective gear lakes. There is a few lakes that are known to have HUGE trout, but a lot of lakes are done come june and only kick out catchables until then. A little reaserch goes a long way. I know in King county its very possible to hit freshly planted lakes from march until may.

That actually seems like a very effective method. I'll have to try it one of these days. Thanks for sharing.

Bigger baits bigger fish. Using a size 1 dick nite aint the best chance for hooking into a holdover. Too small and its tough to keep the stockers off your line. Upsize your lures if you are in pursuit of bigger fish...

My bad on the double post...

Another tip: Tip your lure if regulations allow. A little bit of a worm on a spinner can increase your hookup ratio incredibly...

Throw pretty much anything at them. They will bite it all. If you are not as successful as others around you, look at what they are using and try something similar. I personally use Power Bait, 1/16 oz Rooster Tails, Mini Jigs and small plugs (Rapalas, Hotshots and Flatfish). There is one other lure that I use, but I will not give up that secret yet because I use it on almost every species of fish and it just plain kills them all.

I use kastmasters and do really well in gold/red head. Any casted needlefish also do the trick...man it's fun to C&R 50 of those planters on kastmasters. That's what works for me most of the time. Krok's are really fun too!

I guess I'll recommend some good baits and techniques.

I have a gear selection... snow shoes for anyone fishing high altitude lakes (hahaha). There is about two times as much snow as there normally is in the cascades for this time of year, so it might take us a little bit longer, or a lot more effort to get into our favorite mountain fishing lake.

I inject my worms also but I like to use a corky to hold some scent and add color seems to help. Plus it keeps the worm floating longer.

Well I've only recently restocked my tackle box with bait hooks, swivels, and sinkers though I have picked up a few new things Im interested in trying like some berkley powerbait trout dip, yum troutkrilla (sherbert glitter), and some pro-cure shrimp scented bait butter. i never heard of these before so I thought I would give em a try
