Diploids...what species and why?
I recently read a stocking report for a particular lake. This report mentions the usual suspects (catchable, triploid, fry), however I read the lake was going to have some "Diploids" added sometime in May.
I have to do a bit more research as I am not clear on exactly what the differences are between triploids and diploids is. So far all fingers point to specific chromosome(s).
I understand triploids are simply rainbow trout eggs that have been treated in such a manner as it affects the male and female genes, producing a fast growing, sterile, behemoth fish.
What I am not clear about is whether a specific species is used to produce these fish. I see mention on the interweb of both Rainbow and Brown trout being used. I am guessing the stocked "Diploids" will be Rainbow...as is with most (if not all) stocked fish.
Anybody know anything about "Diploids" that would care to shed some light...? Thanks!

I also saw a report that said jumbo diploids. My best guess would be that they are just huge triploids. Maybe 5 pounds or over? What did it say on the fish per pound?

I am not an expert in this field but I believe in this case” Diploid” is a fancy name for your run of the mill fish that can reproduce. “ Diploid - (genetics) an organism or cell having the normal amount of DNA per cell; i.e., two sets of chromosomes or twice the haploid number.” A triploid fish on the other hand has three chromosomes and is sexless. Just as a side note, triploid fish are becoming popular is some states since they can be planted in streams without fear of reproduction with native stocks. This can be a real plus in regards of environmental concerns.

I have done a bit more reading...and it does have something to do with chromosome pairs as stampie suggested. Was a term I hadn't heard before and was more curious than anything. Not sure what it would matter especially if they are considered to be normal. It kinda struck me as odd the stocking report listed "catchable size- 5K, Fry- 24K, Triploid- 200+ and a supply of "jumbo" Diploid delivered in May". Kinda lead me to believe there was something special about them...other than a fancy $2.00 word...and maybe the "jumbo" part.

One thing I failed to mention Chad. They are making triploids out of everything including grass carp.

Excellent point, and soon they may even be able to make Trips out of Walleye. The process is the same, but they are having issues with a fungus developing in the eggs right now.stampie wrote:One thing I failed to mention Chad. They are making triploids out of everything including grass carp.
A lot of people do not know that there is no chemical or radiation or nasty voodoo used to make triploids. They have existed in nature for a long time, we just did not know why or how.
Triploid fish are created by raising the temperature of the water several degrees (depends on the species) for a period of time (also depends on the species) just after the eggs are fertilized. This rapid, but short time, increase in water temperature interrupts the first split of the Chromosome pair. The result after all is said and done is that the fish ends up with a set of three, not a pair of two, chromosomes.
It is not completely true that the fish are sexless. Males will end up as an XXy instead of an XY; females will end up as an XXX instead of an XX. The key is that because only pairs can mature and reproduce (XX and XY), the fish never sexually mature, so they continue to pump energy into growing instead of sexually maturing and spawning.
Plants can be made into Triploids, but it is a chemical treatment used on them (a natural chemical from a plant) just before pollination.
Land animals are resistant to Triploid development, but it can happen (hermaphrodites). We just don't know why, or how, yet.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

Walleye trips? I have to admit..that would be very cool.

I thought they made trips by using an electric current to "zap" the eggs when they get fertilized. Or maybe it's a different process. I think I saw it on tv a while back.

I am studying this right now in biology in high school. These fish are considered trisomy which as others have saud have three sex chromosomes which make them unable to reproduce

RE:Diploids...what species and why?
they must be distinguishing between "TRIPLOID LUNKERS" and "DIPLOID LUNKERS" because they are in the same lake...(diploid lunkers (aka normal trout)=much better imo)
I have caught many fish in my life. The most exciting? The next one.....

From what I read and understood of the dips is that they are carry over broodstock trout. That are used for making the trips. They are 2-3 year old fish. Usually they are way biggerand have been released into quite a few lakes. This year was the first time I have ever heard of the species...if anyone has any other information please post..thanks

below is a link to the 2008 fishing prospects. Listed is the "Diploid Trout" and where they have been stocked. If they are quite a bit bigger might be fun to tie into a couple...muskyhunter wrote:have been released into quite a few lakes

if you use the search function in your pdf viewer...can find them relatively quickly and easily.
