Unhealthy hatchery trout?

Post by returnofthefish » Mon May 11, 2009 1:04 pm

I have caught two hatchery stock fish from Pine Lake with reddish-pink lumps on thier body. One fish had it by the anus while the other had it near the dorsal fin. I heard that some people were saying that the fish look healthier this year. That led me to believe that its not the first time that trout had red lumps on them. So my question is, have you caught any with red dime size lumps? I think it might be parasites or the fish were injured from being dumped into the lake. I gave the fish away to another angler that didnt catch any fish yet.

I remember this coming up last year on pine lake. There was some talk about it on the forum and I think someone even brought it to the attention of WDFW. If I remember right it wasn't a big deal. I believe the stockers this year came from the Issaquah hatchery. If you want to dig deeper, I would start there.

Never seen a trout in the Issy hatchery, only Salmon. Come to think of it I've never seen a hatchery that did both. I could be off but........

Gian's right, they came from the Issaquah hatchery. That hatchery was listed in the WDFW website at - http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/plants/weekly/

I think the fish were just injured from being pumped from trucks into the lake. Pine Lake is not polluted, so I am not worried anymore.

I suspect that the lake has some non-dangerous parasites in it. I have seen this before in other lakes, in other states, and it is nothing to be concerned with. I admit, I know nothing of this lake, but if it were from the stalking trucks, then it would be in all lakes, and this is simply not true.

Note, I said nothing about pollution, but parasites. Yellowstone Lake in Yellowstone National Park is loaded with Cutthroats, and most have a parasitic worm in them. Yellowstone is about a clean as you can get, but the parasitic worm is a natural part of the ecosystem.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

I remember this topic as well and also recall reading an article in the paper regarding the subject. If my memory serves me right, it is a combination of water quality and natural parasites. The runoff from all of those nicely kept lawns hit the lake and stresses the fish, this in turn lowers their resistance to parasites. I'm pretty sure it will get worse as the summer progresses so take a picture or two and send it in to the WDFW so they can't use the "we never heard about this" card. Here is the link to the this same topic form last year.
