Different Rigs for Walleye

Post by Hoss 350 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 5:30 pm

I'm wondering if anyone else has tried some variation on the walleye fishing and tried a Texas, Carolina, or drop-shot rig for walleye? I've fished for them in Rufus woods and Lake Roosevelt just downstream from the GIfford ferry in this manner (all three) trying leeches, tubes, and grubs on the texas and carolina rigs, and white, silver, pumpkin and grey jerk shads on a drop shot, and got nothing.

However, on both days, no one else was catching fish, either, so I can't write off my insanity yet. Anyone else try it? ANy luck?

My dad's friend tried it a few years ago when we were at Potholes, all he caught was a large crappie but then again in that location and area we were fishing we hadn't gotten any bites for walleye during that trip. He's from Montana though and he said when he lived there that's pretty much how they fished for Walleye with plastic grubs and worms.

First time I fished Roosevelt for walleye we pitched nothing but plastic grubs and worms. The fish loved them, especially the worms. When using this gear we focused on inlets and sheer rock walls. If we'd had them, tubes would have been on the menu as well. So when I fish rocky areas for walleye, out comes the bass gear, I leave the crawler harnesses for the flats. You'll catch your share of walleye, using jigs at the Potholes near the dam, around Goose Island and the walls of Lind Coulee.

Jiging at Rufus and Banks can be deadly early in the year... Summertime, I can't keep the small mouth off of them long enough to catch a Wally!

Hello Hoss 350 and welcome to Washington lakes.com
The Texas rig, The Carolina rig and the drop shot all work for Walleye.
Walleyes like meat so add a bit of Crawler.
Night crawlers are about our only choice in this State since they outlawed the Leech.
A Texas rigged Crawler works but a jig and crawler would be my choice.
The Carolina rig is deadly, just use enough weight to stay in contact with the bottom.
I like to use a split shot instead of the heavy weights used for Bass.
The drop shot was really good when used with a tube and leech but a small plastic minnow and crawler will work. Walleyes like bright colors. Chartreuse, Yellow, White would be a place to start.

We rigged Berkely Gulp! leeches while fishing Scootney when we ran out of crawlers. We continued to catch fish

How well is the walleye fishing there at Scootney? Just wondering because I might be getting a job soon down there at Richland if the interview I had on Monday went as well as what I think it did.

I'm with G-man, save the worm harness for the flats. Texas or Carolina rigs work well.
