Would a spud work the same way?
I've even got a catchy name for it "Big D's Wonder spud" in stores near you. But wait that's not all you get!

I thought that all Russian lures were an 8/0 treble hook with 2 ounces of lead on it.

Hey wolverine,
You are correct.
I purchased this one the last time I made the trip home to the mother-land.
It is only a 5/0 hook because I purchased it in southern Russia.

Actually Adak, AK.

Hey curado,
Funny you should mention about getting hit with this hook.
Back in my Navy days while I was stationed in Alaska on Adak island 88/90. I was a meat fisherman and combat fishing/snagging. I was casting into a small inlet. It was truly war time fishing at its best and after loosing two full setups to a fisherman/snagger across the inlet, I wanted to get even with him. I cast across the inlet in an attempt to catch the other person/enemies line. I misjudged the distance and how hard I cast and the hook hit him full force square in the chest. I was scared to death at the time because the impact sounded like a gun shot. The blow knocked him off of the rock he was standing on and into the water he went. It is now over fifteen years later and I consider this other fisherman/snagger to be my best friend. He now lives in Florida and we talk and laugh about this incident often.

so besides carrots i see potatos and onions mentioned in this thread, maybe the idea is to get the fish to stuff itself in prep for cooking?
