Tackle subscription boxes?

Not sure if this is in the right forum subsection, but as I would be looking for freshwater tackle selections (rivers and lakes) I figured this was the right spot.

Just curious if anyone has tried any of the various lure subscription boxes. Looking for a good way to build up my tackle selection on the cheap and figured this may be a decent way to do it. Any suggestions on the ones anyone has found useful, or ones to stay away from. I don't need 10 inch pink plastic frogs and expired moldy salmon roe. Just wondering if these subscription boxes are wortht he price and if they are a good idea for building your tackle box. I have yet to rebuild mine since all of our tackle was stolen along with our 14 foot fiberglass boat when I was 16, I just kind of bought what I needed, and don't have more then maybe a dozen lures along with swivels, leader line, hooks,m and sinkers, so it would be nice to start building my tackle back up again.

I looked long and hard at that box a few weeks ago. Have you or anyone you know tried the trout, bass, or walleye versions? I think panfish would be the way to go given my location on the peninsula, there aren't many bass out this way that will eat a 6 inch softplastic, haha! Thanks for the advice, so far that one is at the top of my list!

Subscription boxes have been gaining popularity over the past 5 years or so. Usually you pay a monthly fee and they send you a box once a month with gear in it valued much higher than you pay because the company buys in bulk. There are subscription boxes for everything from clothing, to food, to fishing tackle, to survival gear. There are tons of different ones available.

I am subscribed to mystery tackle box, for 15 bucks a month. I would say on average, there is at least $20.00 of baits and lures in each box, as well as a few random things like a scratch off ticket to win more stuff. They also sometimes have some tips and info on how to catch fish with the given baits, and will give you the best baits for the season of the year. I have only tried the bass box, but it is well worth it if you do a lot of fishing! Plus if you try a couple and don't like them, you can cancel any time. They have box subscriptions for different types of fish as well, like trout, and even recently came out with a "live bat box." I can certainly post some pictures of one if you'd like too!

Ugh, I wish you would have told me about the refer a friend feature on lucky tacklebox, I just purchased a subscription and got the e-mail about it, I could have saved us both a couple bucks! PM me your refer a friend link, I'll e-mail their customer support and see if it is too late to use it.

I have one support request in already because the introductory rate promo code for 10 dollars off didn't seem to work either.

I'm doing to Mystery tackle box and not the Lucky tackle box. What species did you opt for? I say we compare them when May's come in!

I opted for the panfish box, I looked at the youtube videos and that was the one that looked like it would be the most versatile for our area, as the smaller soft plastics should work for both perch/bluegill and bass. Definitely down for a comparison of the two, I only purchased the single month's subscription just in case I wasn't impressed with what I ended up with, but panfish aren't too picky so I don't think I'll be too disappointed. Too bad I missed the April box, now I'm driving out to Bass Pro Shops to pick up a jerkbait, a couple swimbaits and a handful of jig trailers and other various soft plastics for panfish and bass. [laugh]

First a disclaimer--I haven't done the subscription boxes. That said, I feel that they may hold some pretty good values for folks just starting out in a given fishery. Those of us who already have a ton of EVERYTHING to catch ANYTHING are better off picking and choosing our own gear.

The old school version of the "Mystery Box" is to pore over fishing reports, pick the brain of the local tackle store gurus and generally grub about for the necessary info. This method doesn't mean you won't accumulate a bunch of stuff that you can't make work, but you generally pick up info on how to fish the respective tackle also.

However, it sounds cool to get a Christmas/Birthday box every month!
