Who in the world thinks some of these laws up. While looking over the page on the tax refund, I looked at the section on boats. Did you know that all boats, if they have a motor, are required to have a CO2 sticker on the boat...........

Warning stickers are required by law

By law, any new or used motor-driven vessel, other than a Jet Ski type personal watercraft, must display a sticker that warns passengers of the dangers of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.
You may use either the Washington State CO warning sticker shown above or a sticker installed by the manufacturer or another state, as long as it is approved by the Department of Licensing. The sticker must be attached to the interior of the boat and visible to the passengers.

I've looked at doing this in the past but could never come up with enough in receipts to be eligible for a refund. One thing that isn't made obvious is that you don't get all of the taxes you paid on the fuel refunded to you. If I remember correctly it is in the neighborhood of about 12 cents per gallon. Doing a little bit of math, you need to use 167 gallons of gas in your boat/lawn mower/chainsaw/etc. to qualify for a refund.

Marc,

The first year that the CO2 stickers were mandatory, you got one with your registration renewal. Now you can request one when you renew to replace a worn sticker or if you never put one on in the first place.

I don't know about you guys, but I got a CO sticker instead. Didn't know I need one for CO2 as well. [flapper]

Hmm, 167 gallons to get a rebate, think I'll start saving receipts to see - lawnmowers, chainsaws, wheel tractor, boat, rototiller, yeah, I might qualify after a year's worth of fuel use. It's a rip off requiring road use tax for non road use motors and has always been a pet peeve of mine that there's essentially nothing you can do about it. :-"

I checked out the link to the refund page, and after a cursory review, the record keeping requirements would be a PITA and make it not worth the effort, IMO, for the refund, meager as it may be.
Requirements
After your refund permit has been processed, we will send you a Refund Claim form. You may file a claim at any time
within 13 months from the date the fuel was purchased. Attach invoices or receipts to support the refund with fuel
purchases through the entire month and claim a minimum of 54 refundable gallons. We will use the postmark date to
determine the eligibility of the claim.
Commercial use
If applying for an aircraft fuel tax refund permit for commercial aircraft, please provide:
• Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity issued under part 121 of the Federal Aviation Act
• Documentation that you operate at least fifteen round trips per week between two or more points
• Published flight schedules showing times, days of the week, and points between operation
Records
For audit purposes, each claimant must keep records for five years that contain the following information:
• All fuel receipts showing the number of gallons received and taxes paid
• Gallons of fuel used in each piece of equipment (for refundable and nonrefundable usage)
• Other uses, gains, and losses of fuel
• Physical inventory of fuel
• On-highway and off-highway mileage records for each licensed vehicle
Don't know about anyone else, but other than my boat, I'm not interested in the tracking requirements. [rolleyes]

I think these types of rebates benifit those people who make a living with off road-fuel-consuming vehicles and boats.... Burning 20+ gallons a day... know what i mean?

Actually, I have been doing this for 3 years, and make my refund every time. $73 last year.

Bear in mind if it isn't moving on a city/state/federal road, it is exempt from tax. That means boats, lawn mowers, snow blowers, weed eaters, dirt bikes, jet skis, and all your other non-road toys that burn up fuel.
