Bodofish, her tilt unit has a manual relief screw to release the pressure like all tilt unit do. Now on Toni's motor it is made of cheap white plastic from the 80's that crap over time starts to break down and fall apart allowing small pieces to float around and clog the pump. I think this may of happened a long time ago as this plastic bolt was removed and replaced with a metal bolt. Worthless for sure and wrong in every way and the pump and motor were replaced on this engine not to long ago. Toni is going to order a new bolt at the cost of 40.00 USA dollars.....for a plastic bolt, but this will put the trim unit back to original and be used the way it was designed to be used.

Now in all fairness I did let Toni know about this screw and asked if Phil's had tried draining some fluid and they did not. So she went out and cracked it prior to my arrival and let some fluid out. This is what dislodged what ever was stopping the pump from working. I just walk up and asked what had been done and if anything worked. Then I said lets try it and up up and away!!! It was so funny this is the second time something like this has happened working on the boat. To say the least we drained most of the fluid hoping to get anything left and refiled it and bleed the system. When the new bolt arrives will get that installed and it should be good to go.

I know about the electrical contacts and the grease but the pump was running like a champ so I new it was the pump or something blocking the fluid. We all know o-rings and plastic parts ware out and oil and heat help them go even faster. Let's hope the unit keeps working like it should!!!

For sure! Drain and flush sounds like the order for the day, after a new screw/bolt is added. But, yeah, lets hope it keeps going, we all hate it when you can't just hook it up and go.

Definitely want to stay away from tranny fluid in Merc (Mariner is Merc) outboard trim systems. Can be used in an emergency, but should always be replaced with recommended fluid at earliest possible opportunity. Glad to hear it has cleared up but it may occur again and require another flush in the future.

The plastic vent relief screw may be spendy, but those parts are getting very hard to find and almost always means more $$$. [wink]

crazy that an expensive piece of equipment done over by a cheap piece of plastic. great job fixing it and forty dollars to fix anything on a boat is like winning the lottery IMO.

Considering I was told new unit=$ 1600 then $800 installed used. $40 to replace the screw isn't much but if there is a plastic from the old screw moving around in there from before I got the motor, it is still there.
