Suzuki outboards?

Post by A9 » Wed Apr 30, 2008 10:28 am

Anyone have much experience with them or have them on their boat? I'm looking at getting a boat for the saltwater in the 20' range, center console most likely, looking at Grady's, Whalers, Campions and Wellcrafts...I really like the Campions due to the fact that our last boat was a 19' CC Campion, and are much easier to afford then the other three manufacturers. Most of the Campions I'm looking at online for sale are rigged with Suzuki outboards, are usually the 2002-2004 models, in the 115-140hp range, 4 stroke. My neighbor has a Twin Vee with a 115 Suzuki on it, has had no problems but then again, it's only been used one summer thus far.

Does anyone have any knowledge about these motors? Since it looks like we are going to go used, I'm really looking at the outboard to make sure whatever we end up with is gonna have a good, dependable motor on it and has been maintained and treated well.

Ideally, I'd love to have a Yamaha or Honda, just because I've had great experiences with both motors.

Any information is appreciated...

They aren't bad Sam. I prefer Yamaha first, then Honda, then Johnson/Evinrude. When you ask the Coasties they'll tell you they love the double 250 4-stroke Hondas. The Mercs are really crappy. Suzuki outboards are quality and I doubt you could go wrong with one. A buddy of mine runs a 150 on hit boston whaler and loves it. With that said, I'd first go with Yamaha, then look at Honda. Those are the best two for saltwater and fresh water running and fishing

My only problem with that is that I've yet to see any Campions with anything other then Suzuki's, because we are looking at Campions in the 01-05 range, and all have been rigged with Suzuki's. I'd love to see one for sale used with a Yami, but none have come up, and neither have Honda's. Yamaha does make the best outboards now, Honda probably right behind them...But we are likely going to get a Campion and they all seem to have Suzuki's, so I gotta research them now to figure out if they are going to be worth the purchase or not....

I have an 06 (bought new in 07) 115. I love it. We use the crap out of it - salt and fresh. Of course flush and keep up on the maintenance and you'll be good. So quiet and smooth you cant tell when it's running. No problem pushing the 18' glass (fiberform) that we put it on - it does about 38 - 40 with two people in the boat.

There you go! There are some engine/boat discussion boards on the internet that discuss stuff like this that you could get really good answers from. But all in all, Suzuki engines are quality and if maintained and well looked after will last for years. Just my .02 Sweet picture Drewp! KTK

Neighbor bought a 21' campion offshore walkaround with a 'Zook a couple years ago. He averages 200+hrs run time per year, and we got it out in the San Juans last year for the first time. It has had zero complaints, runs buttery smooth, is tolerant of his driving style, and generally easy to maintain. Drives his boat with 3 aboard to 49 mph.

Sam, proceed with caution. You are about to purchase a used boat. Take your time and check it out. If you decide to buy it make the sale contingent upon a favorable inspection from a mechanic/boat shop of your choice. Too many times people buy these boats and beat them. They don’t service and operate them in a manner that lends itself to longevity. You will be shelling out some serious cash - don’t be sorry.

I know, we aren't rushing anything and have bought used boats before. We are going to go get it checked out by a shop if anything ends up looking like it's going to fit our need...
