Motor service

Post by beerbohm » Fri May 30, 2008 5:38 am

As some of you know I bought myself a new boat and I will be taking it in on monday for its 20 hour first service. My question is what do they do? Is it just a oil change or do they get more involved then that? Also how many hours do you go between oil changes? BTW I have a 115 merc and a 8hp merc. I am sure I could look this up in the owners manual but that would require me to read and that causes me to become smarter and then people expect more out of me, and we just can't have that.

The 15hp Yamaha on our 13.5' aluminum is 14 years old and still doesn't have 20 hours on it....I wish I had an answer for ya!

It all depends on the manufacturer. Some do a quick valve clearance check, others just do the break-in oil like a bike. They are industrial motors, not performance motors, so do keep that in mind.

In your case, Id say do your oil every 100hrs or every season, whichever is more often.

I change my oil every 50-100 hours depending on type of use and by looking/smelling the oil.Just started using a synthetic blend so I am looking to see how it performs.

Did the 20 hour service on my 90hp/6hp Mercs myself. In my case it amounted to changing the oil in my 4-stroke kicker and I went ahead and changed the lower unit gear lube on both motors at the same time. Check your owner's manual for requirements.

I made a spreadhseet for each motor so I can maintain proper intervals and document services performed.
