Update on WA F/V Minnow 7' long substitute to a pontoon

Post by triehl27 » Sat May 16, 2009 12:24 pm

well I have ben working on this little boat for a while bits and pieces at a time.

What it was when I got it was a 7' livingston that had a cracked gunwale from a badly installed davit system. Thankfully the crack didn't reach to the hull.

I added the fold down dolly wheels at the aft,

Now I have added to it the port side 2X8 that will support a host of things, such as the pole holder shown.

Advantages, that I perfer over a toon, it is light, as a toon. and it's a boat, and I usually stay drier.

Disadvantages, it doesn't deflate and disassemble.

Right now my *HOPE* is that it will support both a 4HP yamaha, and the Minnkota 55lb. not sure if it will drag down the aft end too much though. I will be water testing that setup tomorrow.

Battery and Gas tank will sit on the starboard side, while my feet sit in the left. I have already found that with the Minnkota alone and the battery that without me it is quite unbalanced with the battery in the starboard side.

Also I am not fully happy with the treated wood I put in, it is much heavier then I planned on, planned on 1-2lbs added ended up with 4-5lbs with the treated wood.

The whole premise behind this boat was to build a light, portable substitute to a pontoon. Everything of any significant wieght is supposed to be able to be removed except for the aft wheels and their aluminum mounts.

the boat was free, the wheels were $79, the mounting panels were free. the rest was less then $100.

If I had to build it from scratch,
- boat would probablly be $300 or less(Craigslist)
- The wheels $79
- Rod Holders ~$25
- lumber, bolts nuts etc ~ $25

So less the $500 without motors.

triehl,

I had a 7 foot livingston, and switched it out for a john when I could because it was the jon was lighter. Also, any weight you add to it makes it a little aft heavy. What I did was rig a strap to hold my battery near the front and ran some heavy gage wire to the motor in the back, it does a good job of distributing the weight a little more evenly. With a 55lb motor on that you can cruise along pretty quick too, I got along all day great with a 40lb motor, you also can get by with a smaller, i.e. lighter battery if you wish, and you don't need to bring a lot of fuel for the gas motor as well, 1 gal is around 8lbs....and it will take you for quite a ways.

What I did like about the livingston is that if the water is not rough you can actually stand up in it and do some casting...it is a very stable boat...and I never worried about its ability to stay afloat....they are very rugged.

Good luck and good fishing.
