Fish Flashlight???

Has anyone attached a sonar transducer to something flexible that can be aimed like a flashlight?
I want to know what is near my boat in all directions -- without spending $2,000+ for a high-end system.
Right now I've got a humminbird unit that I got for free (thanks Coastfishin). It works, but being a bass fisherman, I'm usually not hovering over fish.
Do you think the redneck fish flashlight will work? I'll use duct tape to attach the transducer...
