Ethanol And Fuel

Post by rjn cajun » Fri Apr 08, 2011 12:57 am

I don`t know if this has been posted if so couldn`t find it. With the fuel these days and the level of ethanol in the fuel are you guy`s using any additives like stabil in your fuel.I`ve been seeing alot of things across the web on this so I was wondering what and if you guy`s use anything. Been reding that the ethanol absorbs all the water so when you start your outboards this is what burns first due to it being lighter then fuel. So in return it damages gaskets and seals plus other things. Don`t know the reason for the increased ethanol but I`ve heard it`s for fuel mileage and the enviroment. But who knows what to believe these days. Just want some first hand opinions from guy`s and gals that use outboards and stabilizers.

Yes it's been posted before along with links to 'real gas' gas stations all around the country. One is in Auburn on C street. The commercial looking place between the curves north of 'downtown'. Cash only.

Ethenol is being used for the simple reason of MONEY for the gas people and SOME farmers. And so we don't have food to eat and the cost of the rest of the food goes sky high.

Don't worry, folks. E-20 has been federally approved and will be coming to a gas station near you soon..... very soon! #-o

I'm really glad as a country we have decided to burn a large portion of our food supply and degrade the gasoline we use in one fell swoop.

Has anyone had any trouble with their motor having running issues after adding Stabil or other stabilizers? I recently have used Mercury's product in my Merc. I used 1 oz. per the tank as per instructions...... Thing is though that I dropped that little oz. of stabiler product in after the tank was full,, did not mix it really. I figured how much mixing can a single oz. need? Both times I did this I had huge issues running the motor.

Whether you did or didn't mix that 1oz of stabilizer into several gallons of gas will have no effect on the performance of your outboard. Check your outboard's pea stream for warmth after idling for a few minutes. If it isn't nice and warm, you may have a cooling system issue. As outboards run an open cooling system, they are subject to taking in foreign materials that can prevent proper operation of the thermostat, causing the engine to run colder than normal. Conversely, if the pea stream is very hot, your engine may be overheating due to to your thermostat or cooling system being partially blocked. Another thing to check is your fuel tank(s). Do you have external tanks? If so, run the motor dry and then drain your tank dry along with your fuel line. Inspect the insides of the tank for gunk before you add fresh gas. I'd do this with my older outboard's external tanks at least once a year and I'd throw in some cleaning additive like STP Fuel Injector and Carb treatment. With an internal fuel tank it can be a little more complicated depending on your setup but well worth the effort in tracking down what is causing your motor issues.
