Post by Toni » Fri Nov 07, 2008 7:47 pm

I read or heard that they are opening up for geoducks from Federal Way to Des Moines. 1st time in awhile.

That is nice to hear Toni, :bounce: but I'd like to read more about what kind of testing has been done on the shellfish that the state has harvested from this area. It is nice to maybe see things going in the right direction of normalcy for Puget Sound shellfish, but considering how much of the Sound has been closed to harvest and for so long, I'd like to see what kinds of toxins are now showing up. Let us know more if you can.

It might have been on TV news. I only got the last portion on it. So I did a quick internet search and found this...

State OKs part of Puget Sound for geoduck harvest

State health officials have approved a two-mile stretch of Puget Sound in South King County for commercial geoduck harvesting. It's the first time an area on the east side of Puget Sound has been approved since health officials began monitoring shellfish areas in the 1960s.

By The Associated Press

OLYMPIA — State health officials have approved a two-mile stretch of Puget Sound in South King County for commercial geoduck harvesting.

Water tests found no health concerns in the harvest area, about 138 acres of waters offshore between Des Moines and Federal Way.

It's the first time an area on the east side of Puget Sound has been approved since health officials began monitoring shellfish areas in the 1960s.

The Puyallup Tribe had asked the state to check the waters.

Toni,

Thanks for the follow up on that report. If you find anything regarding recreational/sportsman harvesting do let us know.
