New Pistol: Smith & Wesson BG380

Well, on my way home from a visit to Bellingham the other day I decided to stop by Holiday Sports for some fishing essentials... as usual I stopped in at Skagit Arms, big mistake (as usual, lol)! Looked over the used pistol case, then started browsing the new inventory. First glance and I saw they had the Smith BG380 for $369, I had them pull it out of the case, looked it over, and bought it on the spot. I have been eyeballing these for about 8 months now, and this is the first time I have seen them on the store shelf locally, also the price has come down from near $550 when they came out to just under 4 now. I took it to the range today for the first time, and it is a shooter for sure. I was getting groups smaller than 4" at 20 feet, and for a 3" barreled pocket pistol that is superb. I anticipated sighting in the built in laser, but it was spot on out of the box! I put 7 shots through one big hole using the laser with no adjustment. The .380 ammo is expensive compared to my 9mm and even in comparison to .38 spl. so it is not the ideal target gun. Also, the vibration/shock experienced by the palm of the hand is significant due to the small size and profile of the frame. The trigger pull is heavy, REALLY heavy, and I am hoping it will break in with some use. Compared to the CW9 DAO I recently bought it is like night and day. It doesn't break until the very end of the pull (very VERY end) and you anticipate the shot too early resulting in a flinch most of the time....

Below are some pictures for size reference. The frame and trigger are polymer making this a light carry option for primary carry, or for backup. A good summer carry option as well in shorts and a T-shirt. As you can see, the firearm is barely larger than my wallet, and about the same width.

Overall I am pleased with the pistol. There are a few drawbacks like the useless positioning of the laser power switch, actuating it would be impractical in a life/death situation.

Very nice Matt. Congrats. I've actually been thinking about a compact 380 for when I run and this might be a good choice for me. I wonder what Kesselring’s sells it for. Anyway, congrats, it's very nice.

Thanks Dave. I try to check out Kesselring frequently when I am up in the area as well, and I have not yet seen one there yet (if I had, I would have bought it, lol). I think now-a-days $369 is the standard shelf price, when compared to a Ruger LCP with a CT laser grip the Smith is a steal in comparison and a better firearm overall.

Skagit Arms/Holiday Sports is a local shop (not "big business") so I don't feel bad shopping there. Kesselring would be happy to order one though, if need be. Skagit had gotten 4 or 5 on order a few days before I went in, and when I bought this one it was only 1 of 2 left. They had 1 more as of yesterday.

Nice one! I keep a 380 for my pocket gun...... =) the ammo is expensive! I buy when I se it on sale and keep corbons in it for carry. cycle them out about every 6 months for fresh. They make a bit of a pop when you squeeze. =)

thanks for the info matt:
this looks like a nice little piece and something that's right up my alley. while i don't carry 24/7 like i used to, it's safe to say that i rarley stray too far from home without one and this looks to be about the perfect size and caliber to meet my needs. you are definately right in that they are a hard item to come accross on the shelf. i couldn't get the guy at skagit arms to committ other than "they are on order". guess i'll just have to keep my eyes open. do you have any suggestions where i can maybe check a little closer to home for them (around the marysville area)?. thanks again...

Very nice, I'm sure you will become very fond of your new acquisition. Looks about the same size as my P230 SIG, and as a small framed person, I can't canceal anything much larger in size. I think it is safe to say that most any 380 of this size, including mine, aren't the most comfortable weapons to fire. They aren't meant to be target shooters, just a realiabe weapon that can be safely carried and can put several rounds into a close range target. FYI - Outdoor Emporium usually has Blazer Brass and American Eagle 95 grain ammo available for around $14 a box. Outside of the range, I load up with Hornady Critical Defense rounds. Just don't look at the price when buying self defense ammo!

i bought one of these pistols from discount guns in everett a few weeks ago. it was slightly over $400 out the door. i've put 200 rounds through it so far and couldn't be more happy with it's performance. like matt said, accuracy is superb at 20-40 feet for such a small gun. i haven't really played with the laser sight yet, but i was surprized at how far you can see the red dot in low visibility situations. i always thought that was a bs hollywood gimick, but we'l see...
