Watch this ice this year - it could be bad!

Coming from someone that has fished on less then an inch of ice, with large snow shoes, this warning must seem almost funny, but BE CAREFUL out there.

One year in Southeast Idaho, we got the beginnings of ice, then we got a lot of snow on top. Even though we were getting sub-freezing temperatures, the snow insulated the ice, preventing it from getting thicker.

As the snow kept coming, weight of the snow pushed the ice down, freezing the snow/water mixture, making some of the weakest ice I have ever seen.

The conditions in Eastern Washington could very well be setting us up for a similar year. Be careful out there. Double, no, triple check the ice, and often as you move out.

North of Spokane the ground is still not frozen, even two days after my game camera said the temperature got to at least -7 degrees.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
