Shakespeare direct drive

Post by arniejl » Fri Jun 05, 2009 11:08 am

I have had this reel laying around for some time now, and have no use for it. It is probably not a real collector type item, but if anyone is interested, you are welcome to make me an offer.
It is a Direct drive Shakespeare reel. One side is green (the crank side) and the other is silver colored. On that side it says "Shakespeare Marnoff 1964" and then under that it says "Nickel Silver" and then "Model Ge".
I got this reel as I was leaving a convenient store one day by some guy that claimed he needed bus money. I gave him 10 bucks for the reel, and off we both went. I later noticed that there is a name etched into the bottom where the reel seats onto the rod. Maybe this reel was stolen, maybe it was all legit, but I know that I could never find the guy who's name is on it.
It is a nice little reel if anyone is interested. I have no pic's but could get them if anyone would want to see. I have had this reel for around 20 years, it has just sat there in a box, so......

does it have a "free spool" or is it true direct drive similar to the bass casting reels of the 50's. I'm trying to find an old freshwater casting reel so I can go retro and fish with old bass plugs.

If you were to go to eBay and look up Shakespeare direct drive you will see a bunch of reels that are for sale. If your reel is in excellent shape with a box it will bring about $25 but if used shape without the handle add ons, it may bring 5-10 bucks on a good day. Hope you find a new home or put it up for display. Marnoff reels are kinda hard to find at times. Good luck to you, Steve

Fly Fishing is the art of attaching a fake bug to a line and relying on the appropriate manipulation of the rod to deceive the fish into eating a sharp steel hook covered with feathers and fur.

Thanks Steve. I don't care if I sell it. I have no use for it and at the same time, I can keep packing it around with me where ever I go, lol. I just thought maybe somebody would have a use for something that I will never use. Not looking to make money on it, just looking to find it a good home, for the most part. It does not have a box but is in pretty good condition. Handles intact. Good looking reel and I would say pretty light weight for it's time.
Thanks again.
