SSSSHHHHHHH be vewry vewry quiet, I'm Hunting Pike

Post by Lucius » Wed Apr 24, 2013 9:55 am

I hope you all don't think I have turrets as some of you might have saw this post pop-up and go away a couple of times last night, but it got all worked out now.

It appears the pike forum needs some uplift as it appears to be lacking activity so I thought I would try and breath some life into it. I will be going pike fishing in two weeks to Box Butte Reservoir in Nebraska where I caught 30 pike in 2.5 days and lost 3/4 that many two years ago (below are pics of my trip).

Not only is it a good pike fishery, but it is also a good bass and walleye fishery as well.

You don't catch a whole lot of big pike as it is overun with small pike so the Nebraska Fish and Game commission has enacted a protected slot between 28-34 inches where you can keep 10 fish per day (only 1 over 34 inches) with a total possession limit of 20 (back in 2008). As you can see from the link above it appears to be decreasing the population of pike as well as increasing the size structure. Due to the catch rates I had, this lake reminds me a lot of the POR even though it is nowhere near as big at only 1600 acres. Although you will see the catch rates are not lacking with over 19,000 pike caught last year alone out of the lake (that is only from the people that they surveyed).

If you couldn't tell, I have the pike spring fever really bad!!!! [woot]

You would eat a fish that swims in it's own piss?

Ok, a joke ongoing, on another forum I'm on, something to do with toad stools that toads sit on and piss all over. Image and people eat those things. Image

Small ones are the best (15-24 inches). I had some right next with walleye, and I couldn't tell the difference.

Well in regards to Pike being good Table Fair,

I will tell you that they are phenomenal! Below are some videos on how to go about Filleting a Pike for anyone interested who doesn't want to bother with the bones! They are actually fairly easy to fillet, people just have a big misconception about how hard the bones are to get out.

Only thing I would ask is that if you are going to keep any, make sure they are between 20 to 28 inches in length (Those are the best eating anyway and usually the best to fillet). Anything smaller or bigger than that let go so that they can keep the Pike population under control and growing!

Here are a few GREAT Videos on Filleting a Northern Pike, and once you see how easy it is, get ready for a GREAT Dinner!
