I'm with you Marc! I missed the draft by a few months and Nixon (as horrible as some may think) Cleared us out of Nam. Let it snow, it was worth it.Marc Martyn wrote::bigsmurf: I'll grab my cane now and hobble off to the Home...........
-25 degrees, 60" of snow, no school for 3 weeks, 3 T.V. channels, so we played a lot of Monopoly!

Build a man a fire and he's warm for the night. Light a man on fire and he's warm the rest of his life!
RE:1968 Revisited?
In 1968, my mom took me to downtown Los Angeles. I was 4, almost 5. We went to see Bobby Kennedy in a parade (maybe his motorcade, not exactly sure). All I remember was a big black arm with a little Kennedy head stick out. Rosie Greer had his arm around the senator to keep him from being yanked out of the car. He was a big man. Kennedy would be dead that night.

RE:1968 Revisited?
I remember it well. So much going on that year, MLK & Bobby. Both were enormous losses for our people. The Tet Offensive, The My (Me) Lai (Lie) massacre and riots. Two Kennedys murdered in 5 years. It was a sad time in our country then. Those memories still send chills up my back.

I kinda remember the 60's.Kinda.I was loaded during those years and everything from 54-72 was a blur.I remember having hair at one time.I could see my toes without the use of a mirror.I didnt have to sit to do #1.During the 60's gas was like 20-35 cents a gallon. It wasnt called Supreme gas it was Ethyl. My first car was a 67 camaro. We used to get snow in Seattle with 6-8 foot drifts off the side of the house. We used to catch Steelhead in the Cedar river. We filled our Steelhead punchcards just fishing in Allentown.3 fish limits on salmon and steelheads.
The 60's were grand.

RE:1968 Revisited?
This is how our place looks:

Not quite 5' unmolested, but over 7' shoveled out of the walkway. I think our current total snowfall is around 4.5' for the winter at our place. Long lake is down to 14' below normal, so its been interesting looking at the structure. Im a little concerned that we will have cold water for a long time this year in the spring. Bass will be late, but maybe spring crappie will last a little longer!

Talked to my Lieutenant a few shifts ago. He says this winter compares to '68. Both have their better and worse attributes. Luckily we aren't digging hydrants out. Just feel sorry for the Palouse, they have been getting BATTERED by winds this year, far worse than us hill people.
Skiing has been FANTASTIC!

This is our area in NW Spokane. See the stake with the red flag on it next to the walk? That is the fire hydrant. I dug it out a few days ago when the snow covered the cap.Gisteppo wrote:

The days are getting longer and the temperature is gradually starting to rise. Let's hope that the melt off is slow all over the NW.

Those are some crazy pics. I can't believe it has been so bad. And now all the passes are closed. Lots of people are losing big bucks.

That's the kind of snow I like. Drive to it, play, pack up the kids, come home to a shirt sleeve barbeque on the patio.
RE:1968 Revisited?
I have noticed that over here on the Westside as well. I know our days arnt like the days over in the Spokane area, but man it feels good. Fishing season is right around the corner.Marc Martyn wrote:The days are getting longer and the temperature is gradually starting to rise. Let's hope that the melt off is slow all over the NW.
RE:1968 Revisited?
Yep and the cabin fever is increasing for us outdoor folks as the days go on. Weather is nice here everyday down at school (mid 60's last few days) but I sure do miss the NW and it's weather.....gpc wrote:I have noticed that over here on the Westside as well. RE:1968 Revisited?
I was in the Army in '68. I was stationed at Fr. Stewart, Georgia. When I came home for Christmas I got a taste of the snow. My dad had a 16' runabout on a trailer with a winter cover on it setting next to the garage. The snow was so deep you couldn't see the boat. The city crews would plow the streets in downtown Spokane but they had no place to pile the snow other than right down the middle of the street. The berms were so deep you couldn't see cars on the other side of the street, so everyone tied flags to their antennas. That way when you came to an intersection you wouldn't look for oncoming cars. You would look for oncoming flags.
Luckily now the melt is on. Days are getting longer and the temps are climbing. (slowly I hope) I think this winter is going to be good for the fish. The lake levels should be back up and the rivers should be in good shape. The farmers in the basin should have more water for irrigation and if the melt off is slow enough the earth should be nourished rather than wasted in a runoff.
COME ON SPRING
