Any suggestions to stop chewing?

Post by mallard83 » Sat Jul 21, 2007 12:22 pm

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to kick this habit. What has worked for you? I drive trucks for a living and chew pretty much all day at work and I would like to finally try to get rid of my addiction. I am still going to chew while out fishing and hunting I just need something to fill the time while working. I am just trying to keep my jaw at least a little longer, lol. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah I have heard that one before, I will give it a try. Thanks. Keep those suggestions coming. This could possibly help more people than just me.

I picked up the habit in the Navy... Try chewing hot cinnamon gum or using the hot & spicy shredded "jerky stuff." The burning sensation (sounds worse than it is) somewhat mimics the bite of chew. I need to start weening myself off of it in prep for my new job. I could do it all day/night long on the submarine, not so much in an office environment.

When ever I get the urge to stop smoking, I buy the opposite smokes that I usually smoke. I smoke regulars so I buy menthol and I cant stand menthol so I only smoke when I absolutely need one. Then I take up chewing for a couple weeks. So buy the nastiest chew you can, or a pack of cigarettes. Just something you cant stand but will still give you what you need. Good luck its not easy.

Quit smokes and chew 20 years ago. Just said no. Will power. If you substitue, you're gonna come right back. Sorta like substituting methadone for heroin, it doesn't work. Only nicotine is 100 times more addicting.

I do smoke the good cigar on occasion in support of a friend that has a very hard time quiting ciggies, I'll have a stog with him if he doesn't have any ciggies.

If you really want to quit you will. Just do it.

My tip " don't buy it don't bum it and you won't do it".

I only chew for one week a year out fly fishing. I can handle that but it still sounds good now and than. Just don't buy or bum it. If you fish and hunt alot that's not quiting.

This is a good idea, I may just try this. I will probably start chewing Grizzly Straight cut, thats enough to make anyone stop chewing. LOL.

I do hunt and fish a lot, but like I said in my first post, I don't plan on quiting completely I just want something to fill my day at work so I am not chewing constantly.

i chewed heavily when i was in the navy and about the only deterent i found was that the guys i would bum from started to put their used chew back with their good stuff and let you know it, it worked in that i didn't bum from them and they didn't get bummed from. soooo send me your good chew, i'll chew it all up and repack it and send it back to you. by the way i stopped cold turkey from chewing and smoking over 20 years ago when my kids said they didn't like getting hugs from me because my breath and body smelled bad from it. <')//<

Thanks for the offer on the pre-chewed tobacco but I think I will try something else:-& . That would probably make anyone want to stop though. And I am awhile off from having kids, but I can see how that would work having someone so close to you in your life.

i think all i'd have to do is look at > these pictures < to find the inspiration to quit.

i've lost a lot of family members to cancer, so i try to stay on the good side of sunscreen, diet and unhealthy habits since the odds are stacked against me already. call it "scared straight."

good luck quitting, brother, i'd rather come across your name on a great fishing report than the obits.

That was the last straw, now I have a lot more inspiration to stop chewing. Those pictures were disgusting. Thanks for a little more of a shove in the right direction.

Thats funny, when ever I go to a selective gear lake, or am doing fishing that strictly consists of casting and retrieving I get a can of chew. I dont mind chew but my girlfriend hates it so I cant do it around her. But I dont want to spend $7 a can, so guess what brand I get, yup grizzly, but sometimes husky. I cant tell the difference either way if it were Copenhagen or grizzly. But its funny you mentioned that.

I used to chew cope snuff and kodiak wintergreen but that got to expensive so I switched over to grizzly wintergreen at half the price. I just really hate grizzly straight. And I know what you mean about the girlfriend thing, I spent all this time getting her used to me chewing (she would even kiss me with a dip in) and now that was for nothing because I am quitting. Hell, it took me three months just to have balls enough and liquid courage in me to tell her that I chewed. I guess thats just how relationships go though.LOL ](*,)

That's funny it took you 3 months to tell her you chew. My girlfriend ( wife 12 plus yrs) knew I chewed back then and she even tried it a couple times. The cancer thing has made me stop chewing. It's all a mind game and you just have to tough it out. A long time ago I was told to put the chew pouches (skoal) between my toes to stop the jones's or the need to chew until I could kick it. I never did that but I have used Comet on my feet but that's another story. Jo

The money aspect is what is killing me... While I was in the Navy we could buy it for $1-$4 since we didn't have to pay all of the sin taxes. I used to bounce between Rooster Mint and Kodiak Wintergreen and now I am stuck with that Husky/Wolf/Longhorn crap. My wife could tolerate the Rooster, but she says the cheap stuff smells especially horrible.

I've tried to go cold turkey before with disastrous results- I started more than a few fights. I tried the patch, but ended up getting worse and actually chewed w/ a patch for a while (talk about your heart feeling like its gonna explode.) My goal for the time being is to cut back to just doing it while fishing, camping, commuting, and as an alcohol substitute. I don't like to drink and drive, so after one or two I switch to chewing for the rest of the evening.

I have also tried to go cold turkey before with the same results with my girlfriend. It seems that when I tried to just completely stop I turned very touchy and a total a-hole. I think it is because I had nothing to take the edge off. It is also my goal to only do it when I hunt an fish, and that is good that you stop at a couple of drinks so you are not drinking and driving. I do the same thing when I decide to be the designated driver, which luckily for me isn't very often.

Don't tell anyone you are quiting. Just quit keep it a secret as long as possible. If you tell people they will ask you how its going and want to talk about it. When you talk about it you start thinking about it. And you know what happens after that. (just like now)

So when you do decide to quit TELL NOBODY!!!

here's another way that may help you quit. first a story of why i think it may help. when i was 14 my dad got this deal from a store that closed up. he bought several cases of jerky chew (jerky that was to immitate snuff in a snuff can) i sold the stuff to the kids in school for .50 a can a few guys raked up a bill with me but decided they didn't need to pay up(as what some freinds told me) well i decided to give these guys one last freebee so i dried a bunch of choopped up worms with a bbq mixture and stuff it in several containers and gave it to the guys then after a couple of days they wanted some more since they were all out so i did it again but this time i told some of my buddies what i did . well they heard about it and were laughed at for some time. they never asked for any more. so my ideas is i could send some to you in the can of you choice and every time you go to take a dip you would know what was in it. of course you may like the stuff and ask for more in which i would have to charge you .50 per can. <')//<
