Personal Attacks/Fighting in Comments to Reports

Post by Kevin K » Thu May 31, 2007 6:14 pm

Here is my little soap box moment:

In reading the comments to reports, I have noticed a lot of people attacking either the poster or attacking other's comments to said reports. I personally, find it annoying and think that the comments should, for the most part, be limited to comments about fishing versus personal attacks on others. While I understand the need to point out rule violations and such, some of the comments appear to be getting out of hand.

In light of the fact that this sight is available to people of all ages so that we can all share our enjoyment of fishing, certain comments appear inappropriate. For example, a comment to a recent post is listed in all caps and tells another member to "SHUT UP." While they do not offend me, I know that they may offend others. As I am sure we have all heard, "if you do not have anything nice to say, don't say anything." What do the rest of you think?

agreed. I must have missed that comment. I try to read them all but as the site grows some are going to slip through. PLEASE send Aaron or I a feedback alert if you see stuff like this. I have said before and will say again, my kids read this web site and a lot of other people's kids as well. Let's keep the site friendly and open to all. Aaron and I have ZERO tolerance for rude, obnoxious behavior and we will move on it when we hear of it.

I have been a little bothered by this too there is no reason for some of the remarks I have seen. We are supposed to be here for fun and to teach each other about this sport. So please put yourself in the other persons shoes before you comment. No one should feel bad for any reason after visiting this site. I think it is really as simple as the golden rule.

Mike, it appears that you did not miss it for long, as the more egregious comments are no longer posted. The advice in your comments to the thread [recent Banks lake report] should be kept in everyone's mind while making a post. (i.e. "...when you type something and the intent belittles or calls the other person a name that is an inappropriate post."). Well said.

Mike, Aaron, you could assign moderators. There purpose would be there normal contributions but with the added responsibility of checking out all posts to see how they go and the entitlement to delete, lock or straighten posts. Just a suggestion. As the site gets bigger it will be harder and harder to monitor on a consistent basis.
Or you could make it fun and add a new member named Judge Judy or Wapner or Brown to make rulings on situations and judgements towards others.

Like my mom always said…. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, then shut your big fat stupid mouth.”
(It’s a joke people):jocolor:

I agree, we have to put up with idiots in this world everyday, we shouldn’t have to put up with them on a fishing site that we ( at least I ) come to, too share our love of fishing with others…

They have assigned some moderators. Like Mike stated, the site and especially the forum is growing rapidly. I am a moderator for the Fly Fishing topic and when anyone makes a post on that topic, I get an email notification and then read it. I wish I could review more topics, but time is the issue.
The forum for the most part is clean and the regular users are great people. Sometimes there are a few that wander in that just can't be polite.

As marc mentioned, he is one of our moderates and keeps an eye all over the site. Carl "Easy Limits" is our other mod. The Forums haven't been too bad. The comments have been more of a challenge. I definately am reallying on the readers to give Aaron and I heads up when we miss something.
