Garmin TR-1 Gold

Post by Jaksonbrown » Fri Feb 11, 2011 9:37 am

Well, I finally decided that I can no longer live without another TR-1. I had one on the NW Jet back in idaho and it was amazing. It puts the fun back in trolling and backtrolling. Im installing one myself on the Duck this weekend. Has anyone installed one on here before? Got any good tips or do's and dont's?

Cake walk. Sickbayer and I did his. He did the grunt and I did backup on the tech. The directions are really good.

yeah bodo is right it is pretty easy if you read the instructions...The most critical for me was layout of the gyro, pump and hoses (i had everyting you had to worry about, suspension seats, radio, wipers, anchor etc etc etch)..once you have that figured out the actual installation is straight forward, how the heck 3rivers marine can quote me 900bucks to install is anybodies guess. you will need another hand when filling the hydro oil in the hoses as it get a little messy. Good luck, maybe ill go out and take a picture of my installation tomorrow and post here.
AND I will say the tri is THE best thing i have ever owned fishing with out it is a nightmare and labour intensive.

Yea.. the TR-1 rocks.... to be able to back troll down a seam in a river and fish yourself without ever having to touch your kicker is awesome. THen if you get a fish on...just push a button and increase the throttle a little and it will hold you in place! Its awesome! It puts the fun back into back trolling.

Three rivers service dept sucks... I have requested a quote 3 times from them to do some custom additions to my rails on the Duck.. they still have yet to get me one. I dont know how you can do business this way and stay alive. I wont even go into what they did to my motor....Ill never let them touch my boats again.

I wish I had $3,000 laying around for one of the units. I wouldn't go so far to say "puts the fun back in back trolling", my buddy and I just switch off on the sticks and once you are used to driving a boat backwards its easy as pie to cast and control the boat.

Yep, motor stories abound. Bad place to leave your boat or have it worked on.

Very interesting unit. Are these used primarily for holding your position on rivers?

Marc, they are a true auto pilot system for your kicker motor and I'm really tempted to break down and add one to my boat. They are not just for river fishing, they also shine when you are trolling alone, especially when the wind kicks up. Try laying out 100+ feet of line, attaching it to your downrigger clip and getting the gear down in the proper zone while trying to maintain a somewhat strait course when you are fishing by yourself. With this setup, you give it a heading and it keeps the boat on track. Another bonus is once you have hooked a fish, set a course away from any obstructions and you and your netman, if you have one, are free to take care of business. When fishing the salt, especially around rocky areas, this is a real plus.

Last year while fishing in the Silver Lake Open with Don Wittenberger, he had a remote control mounted on his casting rod to operate his front mounted Minnkota. That worked pretty slick. I didn't know they had auto pilot for kickers. That's pretty nice, although quite pricey. But, if you use it often enough, I suppose it is worth it.

They also have auto pilot for main motors as well. great for cruzing out to the tuna grounds as long as you still keep watch for that random log floating around in the middle of the ocean.

I primarily used mine for the rivers. You can stay in a great deal of current and the auto pilot will hold your position for you so you dont have to be on the kicker all the time.. or ever for that matter. The other really cool thing is that you can also hook it up to your gps. So for trolling a lake or in the sound, you can program a course for it to follow, say the edge of posession bar, and the boat will automatically follow the course by itself. I have litterally programed a series of cooridinates on a lake in idaho... set the TR-1 and the boat follows the course around the lake. I have fished in a huge oval pattern about 2 miles long for hours on end and have never had to touch the kicker until it was time to go home.
They are amazing auto pilots.

Got it installed last weekend and went out to the slough to test it out... Damned if it didnt work like a charm! I forgot how amazing that damn thing is... Trolling speeds from 6kts down to 1/2kts. Holds the course perfectly! I gotta say, I was kinda stunned that it installed so easily and worked flawlessly on the first go out.

I cannot wait to get it out on a real river for some steel....
