LW Cutthroat Trout Fishing
Don't get discouraged by the slow fishing right now on Lake Washington...it just gives you another chance to spend some quality winter time with the family or head to that river for winter steelies. The fish are actually spawning a bit early right now, kind of surprised me, I attribute it to colder than normal temperatures (strong ENSO and NEG. PDO factor)... and they should be out of the rivers and streams by late Feb. and early March. When they come out in early-mid March get ready! They will be very hungry and you will have good success. The early fall was amazing and then it really cooled off...some reports say the cutts are 30' feet off the mouth of the Cedar River...this isn't particularly true. Go up along the Cedar River and watch them spawn. I wouldn't waste the time and money to target these fish right now, as you will mostly pull up some stragglin silvers and kokanees (perhaps a lonely bow if you get lucky). Good luck if you do venture out there!

i havnt taken the boat out for them lately, but, have been perching at coulon. after i get bored, i get as close to the mouth of the cedar as i can from shore, and watch all the risers. they get real active right before dark. i tried snapping a few pics of the fish, but, my new cell isnt the greatest for pics. do you think these are cutts?? or the koks, and other stragglers??

RE:LW Cutthroat Trout Fishing
I'm thinking about going out tomorrow and fishing the mouth of the Cedar in that 25'-30' foot depth range. I was going to hit up Lk. Alice, and still might, but I am hearing good things down south, as was the case in early October. The cutts are probably staging...and the rises are cutts most likely. They love to rise for flies and such in the late evening and early morning...then the bite dies off...Lake Alice is presumed FROZEN.michaelunbewust wrote:i havnt taken the boat out for them lately, but, have been perching at coulon. after i get bored, i get as close to the mouth of the cedar as i can from shore, and watch all the risers. they get real active right before dark. i tried snapping a few pics of the fish, but, my new cell isnt the greatest for pics. do you think these are cutts?? or the koks, and other stragglers??

i know this is off topic, but when you target perch this time of year in coulon, are you of the dock or in your boat?michaelunbewust wrote:i havnt taken the boat out for them lately, but, have been perching at coulon. after i get bored, i get as close to the mouth of the cedar as i can from shore, and watch all the risers. they get real active right before dark. i tried snapping a few pics of the fish, but, my new cell isnt the greatest for pics. do you think these are cutts?? or the koks, and other stragglers??

One of my buddys really wants to hit lake WA this saturday. What do you guys think? He said he heard they were catching "chinooks" out there. Its acctually one of my buddies dads and so I didnt want to say anything. I know what he meant to say was cutthroats though. Do you think it would be worth it to acctually target them or just try to locate a school of perch. I got a new deep fryer for X mas that I am dieing to use.

I was just out there on Sunday. Not worth it. I trolled the whole Cedar River area, around the mouth of the Cedar. Nothing. I marked perch though in about 60-70' of water...they resemble clutter on my fish finder. They are there! I would go for perch. The cutts aren't biting now, they're staging to spawn if not already spawning. Go for them old perch!!gpc wrote:One of my buddys really wants to hit lake WA this saturday. What do you guys think? I forgot to add - the water temp was down from 43.8F to 42.2F over the last week...gpc wrote:cutthroatkiller wrote:Wow there pretty deep right now then. I will make sure to keep that in mind. You got it! I did mark a school of perch in 45' of water off the mouth of the Cedar as well, so they all aren't that deep. Anywhere from 50 - 65' is a good rule of thumb. I should have gone for the perch, except I was all rigged up for cutthroat fishing and it was 34F with snow showers...couldn't feel the hands - you know how it goes. Good luck gpc if you go out and report back how you did...I think you'll find them around the Renton area by the Cedar River. If not there, I did mark a good school between the I-90 eastern high rise and Mercer Island in 50' of water.

off the dock if its to windy for the boat. the farthest dock from the parking lot. im going to try and get out saturday or sunday with the boat. i rode the mtn bike down to the park, saw 2 old-timers with a bucket of perch from the east channel (deep 60'+), perch eyes. i love to deep fry perch, might have to go both saturday and sunday. i told them they should post a report on the site. we'll see...

I had a nice one on today, it spit the hook right after it jumped. I'd say he was around 18." That was the only cutt for the 12-2pm window that I fished...gorgeous day out on Lake Washington!

at least you had one on. i cant wait to have a cutt on. ive been listening to you, rutt, and another cutt fisherperson tell me how to do it. now i need to get it done. the perch are very deep, but, they are in very large schools. i was mistaking that clutter for crap weeds myself, until a couple of "veterans" showed me how to read my fishfinder for them. going to get out again on saturday.

Sounds good! Yeah, that clutter had me fooled too, until early Fall when I finally figured out what that clutter was when I sent a worm down there - perch galore! Good luck when you head out!michaelunbewust wrote:at least you had one on. i cant wait to have a cutt on. ive been listening to you, rutt, and another cutt fisherperson tell me how to do it. now i need to get it done. the perch are very deep, but, they are in very large schools. i was mistaking that clutter for crap weeds myself, until a couple of "veterans" showed me how to read my fishfinder for them. going to get out again on saturday.

now I understand what the two of you are talking about. We hit a school on Sammamish last summer that made the screen black. Lots of doubles and strikes as soon as we hit bottom.

Yeah, I'll have to take a picture next time that happens on my Fish Easy DS245 from Eagle. It's pretty profound, the screen looks like this when it scrolls by, confusing at first, but not when you drop a worm or two down:zen leecher aka Bill W wrote:We hit a school on Sammamish last summer that made the screen black.
