RE:New Tiger Musky Pattern
Joe, Post pictures of your perch pattern. I thought it was top notch when I saw it on Saturday.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.

Marc, Lotech and all our other newly inspired muskie flyfishermen,
Please keep us updated on how you guys do. I know you guys are still a few months away, but I'm really interested in seeing your results, especially some sweet pictures. I don't do very much fly fishing at all but I've always had a great deal of interest in the details of it, and for you guys to now be chasing some big toothy creatures, it'd be cool to see some of your guys results...

Hey Joe,
That is a nice looking fly.
I am new to tying and was wondering about how you made that. Do you tie in yellow and olive and then color the red and the green stripes or do you tie in the red.
Like I said I am new to this and have been looking on the web for ideas and tips and some of the fellows do not post real good pictures intentionally so you can not copy their flies so if I have breeched the code of figure-it-out-yourself I apologize in advance and you really do not have to answer.

We will keep you posted on the progress. Whenever I go out on the lake, I always have my camera and will also take my video camera. Hopefully, I can put together a video about fly fishing for Tiger Muskies. It is going to take some trial and error to get it dialed in, but I think that one of us will figure it out. A couple of guys from the Muskie thread have been very helpful.
Lewis, we don't have any deep dark secrets. Fishing is to be enjoyed by all who want to learn. I'm sure that Joe will share with you.o:)

It's not a problem with me. I use a Gamcatzu (sp) 2/0 sywash hook. Sywash means it has an open eye, and you have to close it with pliers. (smooth jaw is best) Then I dress the hook with olive thread. Then I lay in three colors of "Streamer Hair" that I found at Sportsman's Warehouse in Spokane. Olive first and on top. Then Yellow on the bottom. Then just a wisp of Rust between the other two colors. I blend all three colors with a tooth brush. When it's all tied and everything is dry, I attach the eyes. I use self sticking red eyes, and I bolster the adhesiveness with hobby cement.
I figure that one of these flies will cast for a long time. When it catches a fish it will fall apart. BUT, at 40+ inches per fish, it will be worth it.

Thanks for the info Joe.
Being new to the game I like to learn all I can. I bought a book called "Ten Flies, Simple Ties" on the internet. Figure it would be good practic and if they were simple ties it would maybe bolster my confidance. Well I got it in the mail yesterday and I am not so sure about it because four of the ten are foam flies. Do people tie a lot of foam flies? Is this practical? The authors are from New Jersey, but I figure a fish is a fish is a fish and the flies that work there would work here.
I actually do not plan to tie a lot of flies, mostly jigs as I do not have and can not afford a fly fishing outfit. Most of the jigs are just beefier versions of fly patterns so I thought it would help to tie some flies to practice and send them to my brother in Montana since he fly fishes and does not tie anymore.

Foam flies have their place for sure. I don't know what foam flies they showed you, but a foam mouse can be great at times for trout, and it is deadly on Bass.lskiles wrote:Thanks for the info Joe.

The foam flies have been very effective for trout when they imitate hoppers or Stone Flies. And let's not forget the Chernobyl Ant that has been a super effective attraction pattern. I even ties some small size 18 to 22 black ants with foam chord.
So, yes, foam flies do work, and they can be fairly easy, but they are only one type of fly that we use.
