Anyone messed up by the GPS/Y2K rollover issue?

Post by Larry3215 » Thu Apr 11, 2019 9:56 pm

So far Im ok with my Garmin gear, but Ive seen reports from Lowrance, Raymarine, Simrad, and Furuno folks with issues. Some are ok getting a fix, but dates are wrong which messes up tide tables, etc. Others just are dead as far as GPS functions - which means no boat speed, or location.

If you are one of the unlucky ones, there is some info here.

No impact for me until 2028 and then requires use of external GPS (which I prefer anyway). I find MFDs to be like phones and computers, they're outdated 6mos after purchase. My MFD, purchased in 2014, is already outdated (Axiom replaced the a-series) so will surely be upgraded long before 2028. [wink]

Some people are reporting success using an external GPS antenna, but others are not having any luck. It seems to be somewhat model and brand dependent.

There is no excuse for this. All the mfg's have known this was coming for decades.

Y2k? ....Somebody help!... pinch me or something ... I was dreaming that I was 40 years old and it was 2019! What a terrible nightmare!

Seriously, what are you talking about? The link you provided just confused the issue for me. Why is there date problems from 2000 in the year 2019?

Thanks for posting this! It was the first I had heard of it so I was able to up date now and not wonder why things didn't work when I went out on the water. The Garmin active captain took a little time but worked great. The Lowrance gave me a bit of a pain until I remembered it did not like my Mac. When I used bootcamp (windows on a Mac) it worked fine.

Did Lowrance come put with a new up-date? One of the posts in that first link above said that the "fix" Lowrance posted in Feb actually made things worse.

I have an Elite 7 HDI (not chirp) I got it on closeout a few years ago, so it is a litter older. I went here https://downloads.lowrance.com under Elite HDI/CHIRP, I found Elite 7 - with rollover patch. When I first turned in on I had a blue screen after the update all seems fine. I don't know if this is new I only looked for it yesterday.
I am now using the lowrance for the chart only and just installed a Garmin Echomape 93sv and livescope will be here Monday =D> .
So I have a 7" chart only and 9" for fish finder.

Glad the fix worked! Some people are being told they will need to replace their plotters to get them to work again.

You're going to love the Livescope! We've only had ours out one time so far, but its awesome. We have had the original Panoptix PS21 on the boat for a couple of years and it is amazing, but Livescope is another full step beyond even that.

The echomap charts should work fine. I havent heard of anyone having GPS issues with any Garmins - yet :)

I don't know if the Garmin update was about the rollover but it said I needed to update. This is the first update I have had to do after the install update. And the first time using Active Captain and it worked well.
I am hoping to get livescope installed and try it out this week. I have high hope for it.
