My goodness, Rick, who needs muskies when we could have an equal self-sustaining fishery of monster pike!!!!
Canada can't produce fat pike like that.

I agree the future of pike fishing here in the N.W. is looking bright if the game dept. doesn't go and screw it up

Canada can most certainly produce fat pike like that. I'll be back there in June and wearing my arms out catching them. Only thing is they'll be post spawn and on the skinny side. One day I'll go after them in October when they're fat and heavy!

Mark, you can save a lot of wear and tear on your arms by just ice fishing for pike.
You buy a can of peas. You drill a hole in the ice. You place a ring of peas around the hole.,
When the big pike comes up to take a pea.....YOU GRAB HIM! [laugh]

Sad to say I have not been able to get out and do any pike fishing in the last couple weeks. This weather has all my normal winter Pike waters froze solid!!!
Even the P.O. river below Newport is froze from shore to shore and that I have NEVER seen before in my 25 years of fishing it. It is also froze above the dam from the P.R. bridge to the lake.
I'm up to 11 pike so far this year with the biggest at 9 lbs. for me so far, but with this winter from hell in the last few weeks I don't know when I will be able to get out and fish again.

Well I finally broke the ice last Saturday catching 4 small pike. It wasn't a stellar day but there were at least a few twenty somethings willing to play. I did have a monster follow me back to the boat, ever so close to a hand made lure I got from a new friend in Germany, but she wouldn't bite. Maybe next time. It's close to time for the bigger fish to be recovering from the spawn and start being a little more willing to do battle. I'm on the shelf this weekend due to the loss of a beloved family member, but I'll be back after them the following weekend. Then it's off to Saskatchewan again for the Packernut and I in June. 21 days till our departure!!!!

I ice fished Killarney and Hayden Lake this winter with no success. Have picked up a pair of 6 pounders and lost another at shore at Roosevelt. So off to a slow start also. Gill nets everywhere in the bays, mouth of Kettle River, Colville River, etc. They move them around every few days. Big article in Colville Statesman Examiner paper this week about how terrible the pike are and how proud of the herculean effort many parties are making to
keep them from getting past Coulee Dam and eating all the downriver salmon. I guess its more noble to have the sea lions eating 40% of the salmon runs than to have those horrible pike do it.
I'm waiting to read of those big pike catches from Rick.

Hey Chucky it's time. :) I have been out piking a bit, but not posting much. Had a couple really good days this year so far. One trip over to Wash. a few weeks ago and got 13 pike in a afternoon from 25 to 28.5 in. and today I got 5 pike from about 13 lbs up to 23 lb. The smaller fish were 35 to 37" and the 2 big girls pictured were 40 1/2 " and 42 1/2". That brings me to a 31 pike total so far for the year.
42.5 in pike.jpg
40 and a half inch pike.jpg
For the year
Pike so far; 31
# of fish over 10 lbs; 5
# of fish over 20 lbs; 2

Very nice looking fish there Rick. I got out Saturday and released 8 pike. Nothing of any size yet this year. Biggest 2 were 27 and 27 1/2". Not sure if I'll get out next weekend but we'll be leaving for Last Mountain on the 6th. Then things will change for me :)
We'll fish for 5 1/2 days and I'll hopefully run my numbers up by another 100-150 fish, with some lengthy ones in the mix. I have really only made two pike trips so far this year. My total sits at 12 for the year.

Well I ran up my pike numbers a little on Saturday. The small pike were really aggressive and I released 24 pike and 5 small mouth. I did finally get one over 30". Wow what a slow year so for me at fish over 30. My biggest Saturday was 30 1/2" and weighed in at 8 pounds. She put up a great fight. 24 more gets me to 36 on the year. That will change drastically over the next week or so as the Packernut and I are heading off to Last Mountain Lake on Thursday evening, and will be fishing for 5 1/2 days.

Some of you (some more than others) LOL may find my latest article a interesting read, It's all about my pursuit of a trophy 4 ft plus pike for a new State Catch and Release record.
http://www.northwestfishingreports.com/ ... etails/871

Hey Mark I think you made a typo here, " My biggest Saturday was 20 1/2" and weighed in at 8 pounds." Because no way a 20" pike would weigh 8 pounds, I think he meant 30 1/2".

I did manage to add a few more pike to my total on my last trip, so I'm up to 35 now. I got one nice one about 13 pounds, but some how didn't get a picture of it even though we took some. Cameraman screwed up. Here is one I did get a pixs of
june 2 pike.jpg
or the year
Pike so far; 35
# of fish over 10 lbs; 6
# of fish over 20 lbs; 2

Rick, you are correct. I also checked my math and 12 + 24 is 36, not 37. I have edited my post. Thanks for keeping me on my toes. I to have a goal to catch aa 48" pus pike in Idaho. I believe I have seen that fish but haven't caught her yet. I would love to some day catch and release a pike that is larger than the state weight record. Now that would be fun!!

A friend of mine caught and released a 47" pike today, but was fishing alone and didn't get any good pixs of it.
