American Lake Question

Post by eenakok » Wed Apr 30, 2008 8:28 pm

Good evening everyone..
My dad is coming down to Tacoma this Saturday and we are wanting to take my boys out to American Lake. He is going to bring down his boat, so we will be fishing out of the boat. Having never fished the lake out of a boat, I wouldn't mind some recommendations on where to troll. I have read all the reports on this site so I have some ideas, but I just wanted to hear from people that fish this lake a lot. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to build the addiction in my boys (5,3) :)

Thank you in advance.

I haven't taken the time to try it out, but the tip I got was go to the southwest corner...from looking at the WL.com topo map, there is a jetty that extends quite a ways out...just south of there, anchor in about twenty feet of water and throw out some chum (roe & herring), drop a line to the bottom with a 3/8 oz. egg sinker, a three foot leader and a power egg. Then sit back and wait for the cutthroats to come...

Like I said...haven't taken the time to try it out. Right, wrong or indifferent I don't know, but may be of some use. Good luck!

I've been fishing this lake practically everyday. Recently I've been doing pretty good trolling just a plain ol worm around. Best spot so far is in this cove on the west side of the lake. If you troll north up the west side past bills boat house, you will eventually come to this little cove with some statues and a couple docks in it. Just troll a worm around with a little weight, you should easily limit. If you want kokanee, try trolling a wedding ring tipped with a maggot by the VA. This lake is doing very well right now.

Here is the most recent report from the Tacoma News Tribune:

American: David Anderson of Bill’s Boathouse says the kokanee fishing is the best the lake has ever had. Two anglers caught 18 in two days trolling wedding rings and maggots near the island. Anderson said the fish were 13-18 inches and biting within five minutes of dropping the line in the water.

This is great information. I really appreciate it. I will go search out for that cove. We will be out Saturday evening, we will be the odd ball out using a drift boat, but it is safer for the kids than a regular 12' aluminum.

Thank you, maybe this is obvious and I am just clueless. how deep are people fishing for Kokanee? Is this doable without downriggers by using just regular weights? Thank you again for all this information, I know that my kids will greatly appreciate it (as well as their dad)

I've never fished kokes at American,so this info may be useless. I'm basing this off years of kokanee fishing at larger lakes.
Troll Kastmasters or Dick Nite Spoons about 20ft-30ft but since the weather temps are rising, you may want to adjust the depth to less deep of water. Awoods reminded me of the wedding ring and maggot trick(I've never used it,but it works for sure) I always remind people when it comes to kokes....shiny...if its cloudy, the kastmaster doesn't do so well.

Thank you all again for the information. We had a lot of fun. The weather could have been a little better (it was pretty windy), but fun was had by all. It looks like I will need to spend a lot of time figuring out more about that lake.
