Weight of a mid 80 6hp Johnson OB?
I am thinking of a 6hp Johnson but I need to get an idea of weight for one. I dont wanna waste HP for weight, if it's like 80# I'll get a tohatsu or something. Trying to max my HP for weight is the idea. Thanks

I think that I found my answer. To get the most out of the little livingston I would be looking for a 1985-1994ish 8 hp Johnson or Evinrude. The 6hp is the same weight, and I might as well get the most out of it I can.

you will find that many small motors like that will have the same weight, but different HP. the power heads are the same, just different carb settings/rpm for higher hp....i do the same, might as well max. the hp for the same weight. but if you're real good, buy the six cheaper and "make" it an 8hp...

Rollin, what all would be needed for the 6->8hp conversion of say a 1986 Johnson? How hard is it cause I do have a line on a 6hp Johnson. Thanks

**to be honest triehl27, i'm not sure. i'm no expert. for any major work on an outboard, you should have a certified tech work on it if you are not familiar with outboards.**
i like to tinker though, and with a little research, you could figure it out. if you are not that type of person, don't bother. but if you are, it can't be THAT hard.

you replace the head unit, or bore out the cylanders. If you are not an expert, don't even waste your time. You will be VERY happy with the performance of the 6hp. on your 7.5 Livingston. Last summer I ran an 8hp merc (1991 2 stroke) on a ten foot livingston on about 60% throttle, and it was great. On a different boat the 8hp would easily plane me and get up to about 18mph on a 14 foot aluminum. Stick with the 6hp for such a small boat.

I have an 1986 Honda 7.5 hp motor.It weighs like 50-75 lbs.I had it on my 8' Livingston and I and one other were submerged in Lake Stevens.One wave from a water skier and we went down to periscope level.
When youre up to your rear end in alligators,its hard to remember that the initial plan was to drain the swamp.

Ok I went ahead and got a 1985 6hp Johnson. Good deal clean motor. I have not had time to boat test it yet, but it is 7 pounds heavier then the 4 yama I had on it. The prop on the Johnson is much larger in comparison to the 4hp yama, both in dia and fin size.
Overall I think that the 6hp will work fantastic for the Livingston, Had I gone to the 8 and found out it was too much then I would have been really screwed. The 6 should have plenty of power and really scoot me around in the 7.5" Livingston. The 4hp has been 100%, but has felt underpowered since day one I got it.
