Skagit Kings

Is there any place for a bank bound goof like myself to get access to some lower river Skagit Kings?

Hey, this fishery is in my back yard and I plan to need additional salmon punch cards. There are some excellent gravel bars but I don't know how to access them from terra-firma. I will usually beach the boat to fish them. Overall the lower Skagit is a boat show. There are a ton of kings jumping in the south fork, north fork and in the mainstream Skagit right now. The hatchery opener on the first of June (Rockport to Marblemount) will be AWSOME!

I'm taking Monday the 1st off and will be pounding the river all day. The area that will open on the first is from the Hwy 530 Bridge in Rockport to the Cascade River. It will be busy but as long as we don't get any big rain before the first, there will be a lot of fishable water available. Remember that the area will be under a night closure and the anti-snagging rule.

Yes, but only two can be adults and they have to be clipped. Also remember that this fishery is under different regulations than the July 9th opener for wild kings. As always, check the WDFW website frequently for emergency rules that may supersede the pamphlet publication.

Read the regulations before you fish the Skagit! The June 1st opener is for the spring chinook hatchery near boots in the upper river. Open from the Hwy 530 bridge in Rockport to to Cascade river only.

The king opener that has everyone drooling is from the mouth of the river to Gilligan creek. Gilligan creek is only about 5 miles upriver from Mt Vernon. Opening July 9th until August 9th. 1 adult fish daily limit. Open only Thursdays thru Sundays. Wild or hatchery OK.

This will be an extremely crowded boat fishery in limited water as these big wild summer kings have been off limits for over 15 years. There isn't much bank drift fishing water in this stretch of the river. There are quite a few plunking bars that will be fishable.

Very good input and I agree, read the WDFW regulation pamphlet, check the web-site for emergency rules before you go and keep a copy of the regulation pamphlet in your gear.

Regarding the June 1st “boots”, there will be quite a few bright fish also, I have caught (and released when required) bright chinook all the way into November on both the Skagit and Cascade rivers.

OK, we’ll start taking fish pictures and figure out how to post them. Maybe even a few from our Memorial Day weekend shenanigans in Eastern Washington.

The problem with "spring" chinook on the skagit system is they are not even close in quality to spring fish from the Columbia system. Much lower fat content, thin bellied compared to their much porkier and tastier Columbia distant cousins. Yes, they can still be bright, and its the only game in town in north sound but the quality isn't the same.
