Outboard motor question

Post by Rfatt16 » Wed Jan 16, 2008 6:59 pm

Alright guys, i do not know these very well so i am looking for some info. As of late when i drive my boat when i go to put it in reverse, it grinds a bit unless i floor it in reverse then back it off. It almost seems like its not going into gear. Its almost in gear but not quite. Is there an adjustment? Anyone who has a experience please let me know.

It may be just a linkage adjustment on the shift cable. Is it a tiller or do you have a control box? What make and model is it? If you haven't already changed the gear lube, I would do so and examine the old gear lube for chips and shavings. If it comes out a milky white color, that means your gear case got water mixed in with the gear oil.

If you try to shift slow it will always grind. You kinda have to shift fast and stop before you get to the part where its going to push throttle (did that make sense)..??.?

That's what nice about hot foot. You can ram it in forward or reverse and if you push it all the way down it doesn't matter because you use the foot pedal when you want to go.

I guess it could also be something cavdad said but trust me when I say all boats grind if you shift slow.

Dan- I know if you shift in to gear slowly it will grind a little bit but i am way past the inch or so where it shouod be fully in gear.

Take the cowling off and have someone shift it in and out of gear while you are looking at the engine, whatever moves is your shift linkage.

After you do what Chris mentioned, you can release the barrel and give it a couple turns and push it back into the seat and try the shift again. I wish I was up there. It's easier to adjust than it is to write out how.
