Eggs During the Spawn

Post by iPodrodder » Wed Apr 09, 2008 4:21 pm

Has anyone ever tried hooking a salmon or trout or bass egg and dangling in front of the panfish while they attack the bass beds? I think it might work, and I want some fast action when I have to take a break from bass during spawning.

when the panfish are spawning pretty much anything will catch them, thats about as fast as the action gets.

I've seen perch going after salmon eggs on a hook. Would not be my first choice of baits though. I would just use garden worms. When we get the next big rain, there should be thousands of them crawling on the side walks. Time to stock up the planter box in the yard.

I agree with tnj8222, literally anything will work at this time of year. A blade of grass would work, they are extremely agressive. So the answer is yes any egg would work.:thumright

When the panfish are small, and thick as fleas on a dogs back, indeed anything will catch them.

I have seen a couple of time, a long time ago, in a place far away, (HEHE) where the 'gills' were running 9" to 12" and they were not so willing to attach anything. This time, a well placed egg was perfect, and worked better than the worms we had.

But, in 45+ years of fishing, I have only seen this twice, both after the water had suffered a major kill a few years before, and the populations were still growing.
Too much water, so many fish, too little time.
