Toon building?

Post by mallard83 » Fri Sep 19, 2008 8:33 pm

I really want to build my own pontoon boat frame during this winter but I need a set of toons to get started with. I would prefer a set of water skeeter toons like the Chetco or the River Tamer. I have owned a WaterSkeeter River Tamer for the last 6 years or so and know that the toons are indestructible which is why I would prefer WaterSkeeter.

I have tried to search the net for just the toons without the frame but have been unsuccessful so far. Do any of you know how or where to aquire replacement toons? I bought my River Tamer from OregonFishing.com but they don't seem to have a place for replacement parts on their site. If all else fails I guess I could just call them because I know that you can get just the toons from someone.

I want to build the frame just a bit wider than the one I have and make a standing platform on the front and a larger storage in the back for longer/overnight river trips. Any suggestions on type of tubing to use, type of cheap tube bender, or add ons would be appreciated. I am very hard on my current toon so I am thinking of making it out of steel for stregth and ease of welding. I know that it would be a bit heavier but I don't mind that to much.

Thanks in advance.

Call Buck's Bags in Boise. They sell replacement pontoons:

I just bought replacements for my older South Fork for $250 for two. I would look at buying 10 ft. pontoons if you are going to be standing.

Thanks Marc, I will give them a call. How is the duribility of thier toons? Have you done any rivers in yours where you come into contact with a lot of rocks with the toons? I am very hard on mine because I mainly do rivers and come into contact with the bottom quite often on some rivers and need a pretty rugged toon to go under the new frame.

Anybody have suggestions about the frame?

i used 1x1 sq tube thin wall. if you have fab shop that can bend it for you then you can weld it your self. this is what i did. the 1/8 in plate is from freightliner surrplus. the leaning bar it 3/4 "emt conduit and bent at home. i dont recomend this unless you know how to use a pipe bender, i dont. let me know if i can help

I have floated the Clark Fork several times but never run over any rocks. Buck's Bags uses a 22oz. PVC
enamel coated polyester cover and a 100% polyurethane bladder. They are pretty tough. Also, check with Outcast for pontoons.
