I'm afraid that this is just the beginning. Hurricane season starts Tuesday. Things are going to change real fast and drastically if a major hurricane comes into the gulf. This could be the biggest ecological disaster in our history.

I'm thinking that it is already our worst eco. disaster?? It certainly has gone past Valdeze's numbers.Marc Martyn wrote:I'm afraid that this is just the beginning. Hurricane season starts Tuesday. But yes Mark... A hurricane would stir up this already huge mess. Looks like a good opportunity to use a safety icon.... :safe: :safe:

RE:BP
The problem lies in that no one really knows for sure what will happen. This has never happened before. Since BP's attempts to control this has failed, it looks like we will have to wait and see.

I hold no respect for BP at all. A couple of years ago they had a major pipeline leak up in Alaska. Why? Because they cut corners to save money. They didn't think it was necessary to run "the pig" down their pipelines to inspect for corrosion. The pipeline was shutdown for some time for repairs because of very bad corrosion.. Because of that happening, guess what. Oil prices rose dramatically and we payed for it at the pump.
It is time to tighten the leashes on all the oil companies. Things like this cannot continue to go on.

RE:BP
The next time anyone thinks about voting for an oil money republican president, please stop and think about how Bush and Cheney loosen the regulations and safety controls on big oil. They effectivly removed all government control and made it a self regulating industry. The blame for this lays squarely on the shoulders of every greedy person that voted for them. You can't give the keys to the vault to the thieves. They only see one thing, money, money in their own pocket and damn everyone and everything else. Two years after getting rid of them and they're still screwing us! Hard!

If that is the case, why hasn't your hero, Obama, done anything in the last 2 years to rectify the situation?Bodofish wrote:The next time anyone thinks about voting for an oil money republican president, please stop and think about how Bush and Cheney loosen the regulations and safety controls on big oil. I think the blame belongs solely to BP, even now they seem to be more interested in recovering there loss than stopping the leak.

RE:BP
I thought that it was interesting that I got a letter from BP this past week asking us if we would like to take our dividends in cash form,, or to re-invest them into more stock. It made me wonder if they were trying to plug leaks in their own financial process by having less monies go out in dividends to stock holders... in order to prepare for potentially major costs of this mishap.

Sell......now! Reinvest it in companies and technologies that deal with oil spill cleanup. BP corner gas stations across the nation are going to be replaced with BluBlocker sun glass stands and rock chip repair tents.

Oh, BTW, Arco and AM/PM are BP companies.

RE:BP
All politics aside....BP is blame for this and for them or anyone to ever think that this kind of thing would never happen is stupid. Why weren't there emergency valves put into place in case such a break was to happen? All these oil companies need to be held accountable. There needs to be higher resrictions put on them and monthlyh inspections and major fines when they fail an inspection or don't folow safety regulations.
On a bigger note, this is going to have a huge impact on the fisheries, wildlife and entire eco system for years.

RE:BP
There are safety valves in place, they didn't work! That's the folly of self regulation. Big oil can't be trusted to do whats right. They need to be forced to be resposible. If they sepnt the money up front to do things right we wouldn't be in this mess but, then they might miss a few cents a barrel.......... if everything went right.
I'll stop short of a history lesson but we've been down this road before with the oil companies. Can't we just learn from our mistakes?

The sad thing is we should learn from our mistakes but we don't.
RE:BP
they need to cap it. and if they could weld a cap or a valve and a piece of pipe to it they might be able to stop it. thats just my .02 cents.

RE:BP
blame BP for cutting corners and our wonderful federal government for being frozen into inaction with out a clue how to approach this spill as the emergency it is. Sitting back and letting BP buffalo them for several weeks? this is as bad as Katrina. Republicans, Democrats, neither of them have the foggiest idea how to be proactive and innovative.
The members of this board could have come up with any number of ideas to minimize the spill impact from day 1. Why can't our government get off their collective tails and be creative?

I'm old enough to remember the Santa Barbara oil spill in 1969. Today's gusher dwarfs the 1969 spill.
