It has been a while since I've been free to chase after Kokanee at Roosevelt. I have been on maternity leave for the last two months and have enjoyed the time with my growing family and our new baby boy. Yesterday my brother convinced me it was time to get back to work.

We targeted kokanee all day with my usual offerings. Apex, spinners, squidders, and rapalas. All but the Rapalas were quite effective for 3 limits of Rainbows. These bows were quite nice with the largest measuring 21". We only hooked one wild that was released. Most of our trolling was done at 1.5 mph but we caught fish all the way to 2mph.

We did manage to find 2 mid sized kokes. Right away we new these were kokanee. THey seem to like to make a break for the surface shortly after they hit. These both took a pink apex off the downrigger at 14' with a 50' setback. Not a bad way to start the season.

It was a beautiful day on the river and it felt pretty warm when the wind wasn't blowing. Fun to fish with my buddy and my brother. I know we are both looking forward to warmer weather when we can get our kids out on the boat to join the action.

I hope you will consider joining me as we continue our quest for Trophy Lake Roosevelt Kokanee.

Do you run a dodger or some kind of attractor ahead of the apex?

Hi Dave - Glad you were able to get out after maternity leave. I have heard having babies is tough!

Thanks fellas. My 2.5 year old has been training all winter with a spinning reel. I think she may be able to make it happen this spring.

Honda, I do run dodgers on most of my kokanee setups including the apex. I usually remove the dodger when fishing for bows, but the kokes still seem to have an appetite for them.
