Well well well,

What a morning on Lake Wa. The water was calm, no wind and the sun hadn't even peaked over the horizon yet. I sat on the water just soaking in all of creation. Today I simply wanted to be outdoors so not catching a fish would have been just fine with me.

Got to kirkland around 5:15 but didn't soak my line until 6am. I figured fish would be suspended deep with all of this heat the past few days. Dropped the wire down to 35 ft and trolled for about 20 minutes and the rod tip starts bouncing. It fought extremely hard so im thinking a nice fat cut to start the morning off. To my surprise it was a bass. My first ever actually ha! Snapped a pic and sent it on its way. Rigger back down to same depth and for the next hour I released a handful of undersized Cutts, pike minnow and kokanee. I did manage to hit my first keeper cutt in the mix. After another hour of nothing I decided to troll in zig zag pattern between 50-70 ft of water. This produced 2 healthy Cutts, one at 20 inches and the other 19 inches. My trip was cut short due to lightening, thunder, and a very odd and unexpected wind blow that lasted for 15 min then stopped. The lightening was what made me decide to call it quits.

After gutting and cleaning my fish i inspected the digestive systems and found the usual stickle back. In the largest fish I found what looks like a herring. I took a closer look and it also looked like a juvenile cutthroat. Very interesting as its body was quite large for a bait fish. I snapped a pic to see what your thoughts are. Anyways, the fiancé greeted me with a big fat smile when I got home and told me I am cooking fish for dinner tonight! Lol tight lines to you all out there and God Bless! Enjoy the video!!

P.s - I miss a lot of action on my GoPro as it started to stop filming and start snapping a ton of pics. So I kept the good clips and put something together.!! Enjoy.

Nice work! Those are some great lookin cutts my friend! Btw, the big baitfish that the cutt ate was another cutthroat. The big guys are voracious predators!

Nicely done. The large bait fish is very likely a juvenile sockeye (probably pre-smolt). The sockeye are abundant in the lake, should be about that size this time of year and tend to get gobbled by cutts and most everything else. A cutt that size would probably still be living in a creek and wouldn't be as silvery.

I agree the bait fish is a Kokanee too. The tail looks forked like a salmon. And the eye is large and gold in color. Indicative of sockeye or Kokanee..if you catch Kokanee out there you might as well keep it if it is under 15 inches. They eat good and the amount the sport fishers actually catch and can keep is even less than the tribes are allowed to keep in their " ceremonial " harvest of fish during a non season. It ain't going to effect the run or having a sport season at all.

Take the pike minnow out too bring it home and feed it to your neighbors cat. We don't want them in the lake at all!

The pike minnows unfortunately eat many salmon, steelhead, and cutthroat fry. Rewards or bounties are paid for catching pike minnows in the Columbia river.

Given that the WDFW isn't having a lot of success in re-establishing a consistent Sockeye run, why not start a pike minnow bounty program like the Columbia. But I assume that money is the problem. The Columbia program prob gets some federal money. I'd be willing to pay some extra bucks on my license for a Lake Wash validation that would fund a bounty.

Excellent reporting, question do you have a down rigger on your float tube?
What are you using to get down deep?
Keep up the great reporting!

TroutFinatic, I use a manual downrigger with a C- clamp made by cannon. Cheap, but gets the job done and also is the perfect size for my toon.

Very nice cutts! BARCHASER, the Columbia River pike minnow bounty is paid by Bonneville Power - at least a good portion of it - as a stipulation for having all those dams on the river. No such dams on Lake WA. Have to figure out something else. I'd pay extra on my license too.
