I got home from fishing last night about 8pm. Going to bed early wasn’t an option so I could get enough sleep to get up early. I think I got up at 5:30am and got ready to go. I didn’t feel good so I took 2 acetaminophen, loaded up and made it to the lake. I was anchoring about 7am getting ready for still fishing. I didn’t use the camera because I didn’t bring the extras I needed to hook everything up for this type of fishing. DRAT! It would have been awesome.

It was mostly clear skies and it was about 45 out. Weather is supposed to be getting better. Barometer is 2997 and holding steady. The water temp was 59.9 and went to 60 after the first hour.

There were 3 others still fishing when I got there. It was slow. They caught a few fish but each boat had 2 anglers in them. I got one in and then I lost it trying to put it in the bucket while I filled it. I was over the water which wasn’t a smart move. One boat up anchored and decided to troll it was so slow.

I kept chumming and would have a few bites but nothing I could get in. I was thinking that I would troll as soon as my chum was gone. Now I decided I would try the new Pautzke Green Garlic Salmon Eggs. Then as the chum cleared off the screen on the fish finder I saw those squiggly lines that mean moving fish. I put the lure down to 25 feet and waited. Bite, jerk and it was fish on. All bites were converted to fish as soon as it got down. Then for the last one I watched as it lowered and could see fish swarming my lure. I think there were twenty of them. I jerked when I saw them go after my lure but couldn’t hook anything. I sat down and watched my rod tip dip. I jerked it, hooking it and brought it into the boat.
What started out like a slow day turned fast and furious. This is what keeps us coming back time after time.

We are in a battle! Angler against fish! We need an arsenal of weapons and at my site you will find some of those different weapons. For all those who wannafish a lure come in and take a look at WannafishALure.com.

Thanks Bryan. It was exciting. I think my back is out or my neck but I didn't notice it while the adrenaline was running.

Thanks for the report Toni. Nice fish. I haven't made it to the lake yet, waiting for the first wave of anglers to pass through after opening day. The fish look a little bigger than usual for this time of year, correct?

Yes, they are bigger than previous years. My thought is there was a die off of a year (class) of kokanee which allowed this years to get bigger. We shall see

Nice looking kokes. Never heard of chumming or still fishing for them here in E Wash. We always troll for them. Don't know if chumming is allowed in Chelan or Roosevelt but sure willing to try and learn something new if it is. You spoke of "lure". Looks like a single weighted hook. What were you using and how do you rig it? In Roosevelt we are catching 18-20" , 3-4# kokes, smaller in Chelan. Would like to try your method over here

Thank you livingston12. I believe in a few lake one might be able to chum. The regulations will say "chumming permitted". I doubt chumming would work in those bodies of water as I image there might be a current which would make it hard to keep the chum and lure in the same area. The lure has a hook with glow paint, 3 beads and a silver blade. the weight is on the line above the swivel. I put salmon eggs and maggots on the hook.

Chumming is NOT permitted in Roosevelt. Always read the Special Rules section for body of water being fished, answer will be there. ;-)
